Wolverines - Crusaders 20.05.2022

Ennakkosuosikkina perjantain vaahteraliigapeliin lähtenyt Helsinki Wolverines ei antanut United Newland Crusadersin yllättää. Kotijoukkue voitti avausottelunsa lukemin 45-6 (31-0).

Wolverines lähti kauden avauspeliinsä selkeänä suosikkina. Vahvasti kauteen panostanut helsinkiläisjoukkue ei antanut vastustajalleen mahdollisuuksia pelin voittoon, vaikka rosterista puuttui useampia todennäköisesti avauskokoonpanoon yltäviä pelaajia. Kotijoukkue nakutti touchdowneja tasaiseen tahtiin ja loppunumerot olisivat voineet olla rumemmatkin huolellisemmalla viimeistelyllä. Wolverines-maalien erikoisuutena perjantaina oli se, että kaikki joukkueen pisteet kirjattiin kotimaisille pelaajille.

Ottelun Vakuuttavimpana Pelaajana palkittu pelinrakentaja Jabari Harris heitti pelissä viis touchdownia ja eteni juosten erityisesti tilanteissa, joissa muutama ylimääräinen jaardi piti kaivaa väkisin hyökkäysdraivin jatkumiseksi. Helsinkiläishyökkäys ei tarjoillut paljoa scoutattavaa niille tulevien vastustajien valmentajille, jotka halusivat päästä kartalle helsinkiläisten pelikirjasta. William Young oli 80 juoksujaardistaan huolimatta selvästi ruosteessa ja piristävimmät pallonkannot pelissä esitteli kertaalleen maalialueellekin edennyt Sebastian Lugora.

Wolverinesin ykköstaklaajana ahersi yhdysvaltalaisvahvistus Joseph Kordus 4,5 taklauksellaan. Joukkueen puolustuslinja oli vahva ja Crusadersin juoksujaardit jäivät perjantaina pahasti pakkaselle (-24y). Wolverinesin maalintekijöistä laitahyökkääjä Matias Tuominen avasi pistetilinsä Vaahteraliigassa ja tekaisi saman kaksi maalisuoritusta. Tilanteita nuorella miehellä olisi ollut useampaankin.

Crusaders eteni heittäen 179 jaardia

United Newland Crusaders lähti peliin kapealla rosterilla ja pelin loppua kohden kahteen suuntaan pelanneiden taistelijoiden vauhti alkoi hiipua. Tuore pelinrakentaja Shay Netter keräsi heittojaardeja enemmän kuin virkaveljensä vastustajan puolella, mutta kahteen kertaan pallo päätyi myös vastustajan puolustajien haltuun. Crusadersin ainoan touchdownin viimeisteli Nolan Corpening ottelun viimeisellä minuutilla.

Crusaders-puolustuksen ja samalla koko ottelun ahkerin taklaaja oli tukimiehen paikalla pelaava Henri Nordström 7 taklauksellaan. Lohjalaisten ulkomaalaispelaajista Corpeningin veljekset osoittivat olevansa tasokkaita pelimiehiä ja joukkueensa ehkäpä pirtein yllättäjä oli espanjalainen Matias Castagno 11 kiinniotollaan. Eniten jaardeja joukkueessa kirjattiin lopulta Cedric Johnsonille joka kolmella kopillaan eteni 79 jaardia.

Vaahteraliigan toisen kierroksen Friday night-pelissä kauteen vahvasti panostanut Helsinki Wolverines saa vastaansa United Newland Crusadersin Lohjalta. Kummankin joukkueen rosteri hakee vielä muotoaan.

Perjantain vaahteraliigakamppailun selkeänä ennakkosuosikkina on laajan pelaajamateriaalin off-seasonin aikana koonnut Wolverines. Crusadersin rosteriuutisoinnit ovat painottuneet kauden kynnykselle ja voimavarojen osalta lohjalaiset lähtevätkin kamppailuun takamatkalta. Kummankin joukkueen avauspelin kokoonpanot ovat vielä kaukana lopullisista.

Helsinki Wolverines marssittaa Velodromille kovan nipun pelaajia, mutta ennakkoon julkaistusta kokoonpanosta puuttuu useita talven aikana rosteriin värvättyjä vahvistuksia. Mm. import-pelaajat Martin Emos (WR) ja Noam Calvache (LB) sekä juuri Urheilukouluvalinnan vastaanottanut Aleksi Olavuo puuttuvat pelipäivän rosterista. Ahmahyökkäys lähtee peliin Jabari Harrisin komennossa ja heittopeleissä huomio kannattaa kiinnittää veteraani RJ Longin ohella nuoreen Matias Tuomiseen. Kovan puolustuksen yksi mielenkiintoisista tuttavuuksista on debyyttinsä tekevä yhdysvaltalaistukimies Joseph Kordus.

United Newland Crusaders lähtee kauden avauspeliin tiiviillä rosterilla, jossa hyökkäyksen moottorina toimii kokenut yhdysvaltalainen Shay Netter – tuore tuttavuus Suomessa. Ennakkoon julkaistun kokoonpanon perusteella yhdysvaltalaiset Corpeningin veljekset Nolan ja Miles tulevat urakoimaan ottelussa rajusti laitahyökkääjinä, puolustuksen takakentällä sekä potkujenpalauttajina.

Joukkueet kohtasivat kaudella 2021 kaksi kertaa. Wolverines oli molemmissa peleissä niukasti parempi (27-22, 14-6). Peleistä ensimmäinen oli trilleri, jossa Wolvot tekivät voittomaalinsa vasta 25 sekuntia ennen loppuvihellystä. Ratkaisijana Cedric Johnson, joka nyt perjantaina mukana UNC:n hyökkäyksessä laiturina

Perjantain peli tulee kertomaan paljon vaahteraliigakauden asetelmista. Valmentajaveikkausten perusteella jumbosijalle povattu UNC antaa ensimmäisen näytteensä venymiskyvystään ja Wolverines taitavien yksilöpelaajiensa yhteispelikyvystä. Wolverinesille veikattiin valmentajien toimesta runkosarjasijaa 4.

Ennakkosuosikkina perjantain vaahteraliigapeliin lähtenyt Helsinki Wolverines ei antanut United Newland Crusadersin yllättää. Kotijoukkue voitti avausottelunsa lukemin 45-6 (31-0).
