Wolverines - Roosters 27.08.2020

Helsinki Wolverines katkaisi paikallisvastustajansa Roostersin kahdeksan vuoden mestaruusputken voittamalla torstai-illan kamppailun 32-20. Roosters kampitti itsensä pelin alussa pahoilla virheillään.

Helsinki Wolverines lähti kotipeliinsä ennakkoasetelmien perusteella juoksemaan jyrkkään ylämäkeen nousukuntoista Roostersia vastaan. Sinipaitaiset helsinkiläiset saivat ottelun alussa hyvän vireen päälle ja siirtyivät ensimmäisellä neljänneksellä nopeasti 12-0 johtoon. Siinä missä Wolverines taisteli vahvalla asenteella jokaisesta pallosta, sortui Roosters ottamaan kohtalokkaita rangaistuksia tililleen. Kukonpoikien 110 rangaistusjaardia oli vain liikaa torstaina ottamatta kunniaa pois Wolverinesin hyvästä pelistä.

Ottelun ensimmäinen kulminaatiopiste oli amerikkalais-italialaisen Mike Gentilin suihkukomento. Edellisessä pelissä ensimmäisellä juoksullaan pallon maaliin kantanut keskushyökkääjä onnistui viidellä yrityksellään kantamaan palloa ainoastaan 19 jaardin matkan. Antisankariksi Gentilin teki kaksi 15 jaardista rangaistusta epäurheilijamaisesta käyttäytymisestä sekä yksi 15 jaardinen henkilökohtainen virhe. 45 jaardin takapakin lisäksi Roosters menetti sateentekijäksi hankitun keskushyökkääjänsä kentältä.

Ratkaiseva isku Roosters-hyökkäyksen iskukyvylle oli pelinrakentaja Miro Kadmiryn loukkaantuminen toisen neljänneksen lopulla. Jo ennen Kadmiryn loukkaantumista Wolverines-puolustus oli onnistunut pimittämään edellisessä pelissä loistaneen Kimi Linnainmaan lähes täydellisesti. Linnainmaalle kirjattiin ratkaisukamppailussa ainoastaan viisi kiinniottoa ja niillä 57 jaardia. Ja kuin kohtalo olisi kääntänyt selkänsä punapaitaiselle joukkueelle, Roosters-puolustuksen kestotähti, Okko Outinen poistui kentältä pelin loppuhetkillä kolhiintuneena. Roostersin kahdeksan vuoden mestaruusputki on katkennut.

Wolverines heräsi taistelemaan oikealla hetkellä

Kauden alla lukuisia tähtipelaajia rosteriinsa hankkinut Wolverines on pelannut sarjan alun ailahtelevasti ja varsinkin rökälemäisen Steelers-tappion jälkeen ei juuri kukaan uskonut joukkueen mahdollisuuksiin Vaahteraliigassa. Muutokset valmennustiimissä sekä pelikirjassa ovat ilmeisesti tepsineet. Wolverines pelasi kuin uudesti syntyneenä tiistai-illan hämärtyessä Brahen kentällä.

Puolustuksen Ville Valasti peräänkuulutti johtajuutta joukkueeseen surullisen Kuopion ottelun jälkitunnelmissa. Roosters-pelin alussa joukkueen kapteeni näytti esimerkkiä herättäen koko ahmapuolustuksen vahvaan taisteluun pudotuspelipaikasta. Liigan säkitystilastoa jo ennen peliä johtanut Valasti kirjasi tililleen peräti viisi pelinrakentajasäkkiä, joilla vastustajaa työnnettiin taaksepäin 33 jaardia.

Wolverines puolustus onnistui laajalla rintamalla. William James tuntui olevan jälleen joka puolella kenttää keräten tililleen kymmenen taklausmerkintää. Nuoret takapuolustajat Elmeri Laalo sekä liigan syötönkatkotilastoa johtava Arttu Ketonen nappasivat kumpainenkin kertaalleen Roosters-pelinrakentajan heiton hyppysiinsä. Ketosen katkoa voidaan pitää pelin momentumin kannalta tärkeänä. Nuori mies onnistui katkossaan hetkellä, jolloin Roosters oli juuri saanut edellisessä pelissä pallon haltuunsa niin ikään syötönkatkolla.

Micky Kyei oli pelin toisen puoliskon kuumin nimi. Kyei pelasi toista otteluaan tällä kaudella keskushyökkääjän paikalla ja kantoi palloa 118 jaardia tehden kolme touchdownia. Tiukassa tuplavartioinnissa ollut Sebastien Sagne sai pallon haltuunsa vain kahdesti, mutta sitoi Roostersin takakentältä kaksi avainpelaajaa pois toisaalta tehokkaasti. Roostersin Akseli Olin otti kaksi kertaa syötön vastaanoton häirinnän rangaistuksen puolustaessaan nopeaa Sagnea. Wolverines-pelinrakentaja Chris Forcier väläyttelin juoksunopeuttaan säästellen, mutta onnistui maalinteossa pariin otteeseen.

Torstai-illan kamppailu oli erityisesti hallitsevan mestarin osalta dramaattinen. Rangaistukset ja loukkaantumiset sekä erinomaisesti pelannut vastustaja tönäisivät Roostersin pois valtaistuimeltaan runkosarjasijoitukseen 5. Wolverines jatkaa kauttaan pudotuspeleissä.

Helsinkiläisseurat Wolverines ja Roosters kohtaavat torstaina paikalliskamppailussa, jossa on panoksena välieräpaikka. Jos kotijoukkue Wolverines voittaa, on hallitseva mestari ulkona pudotuspeleistä.

Nyt jos koskaan helsinkiläisjoukkueiden paikalliskamppailussa on sähköä ilmassa maksimaalinen määrä. Nousukuntoinen Roosters saapuu vierailulle Kallioon ailahtelevasti pelanneen Wolverinesin vieraaksi. Ahma-joukkue aloitti kautensa erinomaisesti pysäyttäen avausottelussaan varsin nuorella puolustus kalustollaan Seinäjoki Crocodilesin pelottavan juoksuhyökkäyksen. Kauden avausottelun antina Wolverinesin takapuolustaja Arttu Ketonen johtaa edelleen sarjan syötönkatkojen tilastoa.

Avausvoittonsa jälkeen Wolverinesin tie on ollut tuskainen. Toisen kierroksen ottelussa pelinrakentaja Chris Forcier loukkasi nilkkansa ja oli pois kentältä puolikkaan pelin ajan. Vastustaja Royals käytti tilanteen hyödyksi ja karkasi tavoittamattomiin, vaikka Forcier palasikin ottelun viimeisellä neljänneksellä kentälle nilkuttaen. Wolverinesin hyvä momentum nollattiin Royals-pelin useilla ikävillä tapahtumilla ja vasta Porvoossa Butchers-pelin aikana ahmat tuntuivat saaneen pakettiaan takaisin kasaan.

Pelinrakentaja Forcier kertoo, missä tunnelmissa ratkaisevaan peliin lähdetään ahma-leirissä.

-Lähdemme peliin itsevarmana ja täysin tietoisina pelin suuresta merkityksestä. Kyse on joko voitosta tai kotiin lähtemisestä. Tämä on pelin henki playoff-vaiheessa. Juuri tällaisia hetkiä varten todelliset taistelijat harjoittelevat ja juuri nyt on aika onnistua parhaalla tavalla.

Me pelaajat ja koko joukkue pyrimme pitämään kiinni siitä hengestä ja momentumista, jonka onnistuimme saavuttamaan hyökkäyksessä ja puolustuksessa viime viikolla. Tämä ottelu ratkaisee paitsi sen, kuka menee playoff-peleihin mutta, myös miltä sijalta seuraava kautta lähdetään rakentamaan.

Ja kaiken tämän lisäksi kyseessä on paikalliskamppailu. Ottelun voittaja on kaupungin ykkösjoukkue. Tiedämme, että Roosters on hyvin valmistautunut ja tulee taistelemaan tuosta asemasta täydellä voimallaan. Vastustajamme on hyvin valmennettu sekä kurinalainen ja joukkueessa on erinomaisia pelaajia, jotka ovat tottuneet tekemään pisteitä taululle.

Odotan suurta taistelupeliä molemmilta joukkueilta ja lopulta torstai-iltana parempi joukkue tulee voittamaan kamppailun.

Wolverines on tehnyt pientä hienosäätöä erityisesti puolustuksen ryhmitykseen. Ville Valastin ja Benjamin Egbudiven taakse ryhmitetään puolustuksen liikkuva tukimies-trio William James, Sebastian Gauthier sekä Oscar Vasquez-Dyer. All-in mentaliteetista kertoo Sebastien Sagnen ja Micky Kyein sijoittamiset avaaviksi pelaajiksi myös puolustuksessa. Hyökkäyksessä Kyei jatkaa keskushyökkääjän roolissaan. Laitahyökkääjistä Cedric Johnson palaa kokoonpanoon levättyään Butchers-pelin.

Roostersilla kauden tärkein peli

Mikäli Wolverines kärsii torstaina tappion, jää sille hiuksenhieno mahdollisuuspäästä pudotuspeleihin, mikäli Butchers yllättää lauantaina Crocodilesin. Roostersille samankaltaista takaporttia ei ole tarjolla. Vain voitto kelpaa. Päävalmentaja Juha Hakala kommentoi asetelmaa Roostersin verkkosivuilla:

-Kyseessä on meidän tämän kauden tärkein ottelu- voitolla kausi jatkuu, tappiolla ei. Mitään ei voi jättää seuraavan yrityksen tai pelin varaan vaan pelit pitää tehdä itse, nyt eikä sitten. Meidän kaikki yksikkömme ovat parantaneet peliään ottelu ottelulta ja meillä on hyvä treeniviikko takana. Olemme valmiita pelaamaan tämän kauden parasta Roosters-fudista ja näyttämään koko Vaahteraliigalle, että olemme ansainneet paikkamme pudotuspeleissä.

Puolustuksessa meidän pitää onnistua puolustamaan Wolverinesilta isot pelit pois, joita on totuttu näkemään tällä kaudella Sagnen ja Forcierin toimesta. Hyökkäyksessä meidän pitää onnistua linjapelissä, jonka myötä saadaan juoksulle tilaa ja heitolle aikaa, jolloin meidän pelintekijät pääsevät tekemään pelejä, joka puolella kenttää.

Roosters asettaa torstaina kentällä miehistön, jolla on potentiaalia voittaa kenet tahansa Vaahteraliigan joukkueista tällä kaudella. Pieniä kysymysmerkkejä on kuitenkin leivottu mukaan. Epävarmojen pelaajien listalle on kirjattu Camille Gruel, Viljo Lempinen, Akseli Olin, Walter Vasanoja, Karri Pajarinen sekä Johannes Jauhiainen. Näistä Olin on listattu avaavaksi kulmapuolustajaksi.
