Wolverines – Butchers 31.07.2022

Helsinki Wolverines otti voiton Porvoon Butchersista Vaahteraliigan sunnuntaipelissä.  Molemmat joukkueet tarvitsivat kipeästi sarjapisteitä, jotka jäivät lopulta kotijoukkueelle lukemin 38-20 (21-14).

Helsinki Wolverines otti kauden kuudennen voittonsa Vaahteraliigassa. Sunnuntaina se ei tullut helpolla.  Playoff-toiveitaan yllä pitävä Butchers saapui Velodromille latautuneena ja kahden viikon ajan yksinomaan Wolverines-peliin keskittyneenä. Porvoolaisten edellinen peli oli ollut 14. heinäkuuta pelattu suurinumeroinen Wolverines-kohtaaminen, joka päättyi helsinkiläisten 34-48 voittoon.

Butchers aloitti pelin vahvasti ja pakotti kotijoukkueen luopumaan pallosta kolme-ja-ulos periaatteella vain kaksi etenemisjaardia keränneenä. Oman avausdraivinsa Butchers kuljetti näyttävästi maaliin 79 jaardin matkan. Ottelun ensimmäisen pistesuorituksen kirjautti tulostaululle Luukas Eerola, joka oli sunnuntaina vahvassa vedossa.  Suurten pelien Eerola koppasi ottelun aikana Brandon Gwinnerin heiton kiinni neljä kertaa keräten niillä komeat 110 jaardia ja kaksi touchdownia.

Sunnuntain joukkueista Butchers pelasi ottelun alussa tasapainoisempaa hyökkäyspeliä. Erityisesti keskushyökkääjä Seth Rowland oli saanut yhteispelin hyökkäyslinjan kanssa kuntoon. Kentän todennäköisesti pienikokoisin pelaaja löysi toistuvasti aukkoja Wolverines-puolustuksesta ja nakutti tasaisesti jaardeja 4,4 keskiarvolla. Kaikki Butchersin maalit tehtiin kuitenkin Gwinnerin heitoilla. Eerolan lisäksi touchdownin onnistui koppaamaan itselle takuuvarma Mikko Seppänen.

Butchers-puolustuksessa erityisesti Atro Heinosella oli hyvä pelipäivä. Linjamies onnistui säkittämään Wolverines-pelinrakentaja Jabari Harrisin kolmasti. Kauden kahdeksan säkitystä nostaa Heinosen jaetulle kärkipaikalle Vaahteraliigan säkkitilastossa yhdessä Steelersin Ikeem Allenin kanssa. Eniten taklauksia porvoolaisista keräsi Ilmari Ikäheimo (5,5 kpl).

Ottelun jälkeisessä Ruutu-haastattelussa Butchersin Luukas Eerola kertoi joukkueen saaneen valmistautua peliin rauhassa, mutta se ei riittänyt voittoon sunnuntaina.

Curtis Slater käänsi pelin momentumin

Wolverines lähti tärkeään sunnuntain peliin siipirikkoisena. Erityisesti joukkueen alkuperäisestä puolustukseen avausmiehistöstä oli useampikin mies poissa.  Maajoukkue-endien Ville Valastin ja Jonis Heikkisen lisäksi peliin eivät pukeneet Ahmojen taklaustilaston kärkinimet Eric Irvin eikä Joseph Kordus. Poissa puolustuslinjasta oli myös James Perrineau.

Avausmiesten poistuessa toipilaiksi yksi kerrallaan, Wolvojen sarjan alkuviikoilla liigan tiukimmaksi kehuttu puolustus on alkanut ajoin vuotamaan. Frontin miehitykseen on löytynyt paikkaajia, mutta suurimmat haasteet löytyvät takakentän miehityksessä.

Butchers-pelissä Wolverines-hyökkäys lähti liikkeelle yskähdellen, mutta kehittui pelin edetessä voiton vaatimalle tasolle.  Helsinkiläiset keräsivät jaardeja tasaisesti juosten (180)  ja heittäen (188). Pelinrakentaja Jabari Harris osoitti juoksuvoimansa karkaamalla kertaalleen maalintekoon 62 jaardin juoksullaan. Kaikkiaan touchdowneja kirjattiin viidelle eri pelaajalle, mukaan lukien puolustuksen Curtis Slater, joka onnistui maalinteossa poimimansa rähmäyksen jälkipelissä. Maininnan ansaitsee myös potkaisijana urakoinut Aleksi Pulkkinen, joka onnistui viidessä liäpistepotkussaan ja pelin päätteeksi kenttäpotkumaalin haarukkaan.

Butchers oli hyvin pelissä mukana ottelun ensimmäisellä puoliajalla, vaikka porvoolaisten salama-alun jälkeen Wolverinesin onnistui siirtymään johtoon ensimmäisen neljänneksen päätteeksi.  Toisen neljänneksen alussa Pelinrakentaja Gwinner oli kuljettamassa palloa eteenpäin hyvällä rytmillä, kun Wolverines-tukimies Max Poikonen onnistui iskemään pallon irti hänen kädestä ja palohaukkana tunnettu Slater nappasi pallon kainaloon ja paineli maaliin saakka.  Ottelun Vakuuttavimmaksi Pelaajaksi valitun Slaterin suoritus siirsi pelin momentumin Wolverinesille, joka piti sitä hallussaan loppuvihellykseen saakka.

Wolverines-puolustuksessa debyyttinsä tekin ex-butchers Alvin Reels, joka oli Slaterin jälkeen kotijoukkueen ahkerin taklaaja 5,5 suorituksella. Reels värvättiin Wolverines-puolustukseen tuuraamaan Joseph Kordusia joka on toistaiseksi toipilaana. Hienosti vastuuta kantoi myös puolustuslinjan Edo Waxlax, jonka peliaika lisääntyi useamman avauksen puolustajan puututtua miehistöstä. Sunnuntaina Waxlaxille 2,5 taklausta aloituslinjan takana. Säkityksiin kotijoukkueesta ylsivät  Benji Egbudiwe ja Willy Lindfors.

TE:n ja FB:n paikalla pelaava Asko Mäntymäki on saanut Wolverinesin viimeisissä peleissä kasvavassa määrin vastuuta. Ruutu-haastattelussaan 13 juoksujaardia ja 11 kiinniottojaardia kerännyt Mäntymäki oli tyytyväinen, että heikon avausjakson jälkeen Wolverines pääsi parempaan rytmiin.

appio Wolverinesille merkitsee Butchersille useammankin pakkovoiton putkea, mikäli Porvoossa haaveillaan yhä pudotuspelipaikasta. Haastava paikka on edessä jo tulevana torstaina, jolloin lepoviikoltaan palaava Roosters asettuu vastaan Porvoon keskuskentällä. Myös Wolverinesilla on viikon kuluttua edessään tärkeä ottelu. Ahmojen vieraaksi saapuu vahvavireinen Crocodiles, joka on tasapisteissä Wolverinesin kanssa ja taistelee rajusti pudotuspelien kotiedusta.

Poikkeuksellisesti sunnuntaina pelattavassa vaahteraliigakamppailussa Helsinki Wolverines isännöi Porvoon Butchersia. Ottelulla on suuri merkitys molempien joukkueiden playoff-haaveiden näkökulmasta.

Wolverines ja Butchers kohtasivat edellisen kerran heinäkuun puolivälissä, jolloin pelistä muodostui odotettua tiukempi. Butchers onnistui roikkumaan pelissä mukana pitkään, eikä tuolloin vahvan alkukauden pelannut Wolverines onnistunut pysäyttämään odotetusti porvoolaishyökkäystä. Nyt on vettä virrannut lisää Porvoon joessa ja joukkueiden kokoonpanoissa tapahtunut hienosäätöjä erinäisistä syistä. Sunnuntain pelistä on kehkeytymässä jännittävä taistelu pisteistä.

Ex Butchers Alvin Reels vahvistaa Wolverinesia

Helsinki Wolverines kertoi pelin kynnyksellä vahvistavansa puolustustaan Alvin Reels Jr:llä. Michiganin Detroitista lähtöisin oleva tukimies pelasi viime kaudella Butchersin paidassa keräten 35,5 taklausta, kaksi pelinrakentajasäkitystä ja yhden syötönkatkon. Wolverines on joutunut vahvistamaan puolustustaan yhdysvaltalaistukimies Joseph Kordusin oltua poissa jo kahdesta pelistä käsivammansa takia. Reels siirtyy Ahmoihin puolalaisesta Bialystok Lowlandersista.

Helsinkiläiset saavat peliin mukaan myös belgialaislinjamies Paul Minzenin, joka loukkaantui joukkueiden edellisessä kohtaamisessa Porvoossa ja oli sivussa Roosters-pelistä.

Butchersin kerättävä lisää pisteitä

Wolverinesin tappio Roostersille oli erittäin huono uutinen Porvoon Butchersille. Alkukauden aikana tasapistein sarjan neljättä sijaa tavoitelleilla Roostersilla ja Butchersilla on sarjataulukossa nyt kahden voiton ero ja käytännössä toinen Butchersin päävastustaja playoff-taistelussa onkin Wolverines.   Jos porvoolaiset häviävät sunnuntaina, tulee playoff-paikan saavuttamisesta äärimmäisen vaikeaa.

Butchers on toistaiseksi ollut heittopuolustukseltaan liigan heikoin joukkue. Sunnuntaista Velodromilla saattaa tulla pitkä, mikäli joukkue ei onnistu pysäyttämään vastustajan tähtipitoista laiturikaartia. Tähän mennessä Butchers on päästänyt heittöjaardeja taakseen keskimäärin 223.

Porvoolaisten hyökkäyspeli on saanut uusia ulottuvuuksia yhdysvaltalaiskeskushyökääjä Seth Rowlandin liityttyä joukkueeseen. Wolverines ei voi yksinomaan keskittyä puolustamaan pelinrakentaja Brandon Gwinnerin juoksuja Rowlandin tarjotessa perinteistä juoksu-uhkaa kentällä. Rowland onnistui joukkueiden edellisessä kohtaamisessa touchdownin teossa kahdesti.

Sunnuntain Vaahteraliigaottelu on peliviikko 11 merkityksellisin playoff-asetelmien näkökulmasta. Viime kaudella Porvoossa pelanneen Alvin Reelsin ilmestyminen vastustajan rosteriin tuo peliin oman jännitteensä.  Ottelun kick off Käpylän Velodromilla klo 16:30.
