Steelers - Wolverines 17.07.2021

30-vuotista taivaltaan juhliva Kuopio Steelers sai vieraakseen Väinölänniemelle Helsinki Wolverinesin. Steelers otti isännän otteet pelin alusta alkaen ja voitti lopulta ottelun selkein lukemin 44-6 (28-6).

Steelers oli voittanut kaikki kolme edellistä otteluaan yksinomaan pohjalaisjoukkueita vastaan ja valmistautui peliin selvänä ennakkosuosikkina. Wolverinesilla on ollut erilaisia haasteita import-pelaajiensa kanssa ja lähti lauantain otteluun täysin uuden pelinrakentajan johdolla. Steelers onnistui ratkaisemaan juhlaottelunsa jo kahdella ensimmäisellä hyökkäysvuorollaan, joista saadut pisteet olisivat jo sellaisenaan riittäneet lauantaina voittoon.

Paremmasta joukkueesta ei ollut lauantaina epäselvyyttä

Steelers ratkaisi ottelun vahvalla juoksupelillään. Joukkueen 236 juoksujaardista 180 kirjattiin LeAnthony Reasnoverille, joka onnistui lauantaina maalinteossa kahdesti. Tukimiehen paikalla pääosin pelaava Maurice Wright Jr kantoi palloa kaksi kertaa ja molemmilla kerroilla tuloksena touchdown. Kuopiolaisten juoksupeliä täydensivät Tuukka Lehtonen 45 jaardillaan ja ottelun lopussa peliaikaa saanut Casper Bakker 17 jaardillaan.

Lauantaina Steelers dominoi linjapelaamista pallon molemmilla puolilla ja poikkeuksetta lauantain kaltaisella ylivoimalla lopputuloksena on pelin voitto. Hyökkäyslinja raivasi näyttävästi tietä keskushyökkääjille ja erityisesti pelin toisella puoliajalla kuopiolaisten puolustuslinja on täysin pitelemätön. Wolverines pelinrakentaja säkitettiin ottelussa kuusi kertaa ja palloa kantava pelaaja aloituslinjan takana peräti kymmen kertaa. Puolustuksen hienon illan kruunasivat kolme syötönkatkoa, joista ensimmäisen Wright Jr. palautti maaliin saakka. Yhdysvaltalaisen maali näytti suunnan pelin toisen puoliajan tapahtumille. Wolverines-hyökkäys tuntui juuri pääsevän pelissä toivomaansa rytmiin ennen Wright Jr:n katkoa. Kaksi muuta intteriä kirjattiin Eero Vaijan ja Riku Haukan nimiin.

Kuopio pelasi juhlaottelussaan tasapainoista jenkkifutista. Päävalmentaja Pekka Utriaisen ei tarvinnut kaivaa pelikirjasta kikkasivuja esille, kun onnistumisia ropisi leveällä rintamalla. Ainoa kauneusvirhe ottelussa oli ranskalaislaituri Jefferson Alexandren suihkukomennus kahden epäurheilijamaisesta käyttäytymisestä annetun rangaistuksen jälkeen. Joukkueen yhdeksän rangaistusta ja niiden tuomat 95 miinusjaardia saattavat myös päätyä Utriaisen vetämien alkuviikon palauttavien treenien puheenaiheeksi. Pelinrakentaja Joey Bradley pelasi lauantaina eleettömän ja virheettömän pelin onnistui löytämään 18 heitollaan laiturinsa 12 kertaa.

Wolverines esitteli uuden pelinrakentajan

Wolverinesin rosterin suuri mielenkiinnon kohde oli joukkueen uusi pelirakentaja Jordan Williams. Varovaisen alun jälkeen Williams alkoi löytää rytmiä pelaamiseen toisen neljänneksen aikana ja yhteispeli erityisesti Phung Nguyenin kanssa toimi mallikkaasti. Ensimmäisen puoliajan aikana Williams onnistui heitoissaan 75 % tarkkuudella. Ahmojen ainoan touchdownin nappasi kiinni Curtis Slater komeasti maaliviivan yli venyttäen.

Ottelun toisen neljänneksen alussa Steelers-puolustus laittoi uuden vaiheen silmään ja Williams oli jatkuvasti ahtaalla. Syötönkatkon heittäminen kahdella perättäisellä heitolla kolmannen neljänneksen alussa ei varmasti nostanut miehen pelihuumoria Väinölänniemen helteessä. Williams osoitti Kuopiossa olevansa nopeajalkainen pelinrakentaja, joka kykenee liikuttamaan ketjuja juoksuillaan ja heitoillaan kunhan yhteispeli muun miehistön kanssa saadaan hiottua kuntoon.

Pelin alla Wolverines ilmoitti sekä keskushyökkääjä Breon Allenin, että takapuolustaja Dejion Lynchin pelaamisen olevan epävarmaa. Lynch oli kentällä hetken ottelun alussa, mutta seurasi suurimman osan pelistä sivurajalla veryttelyasussa. Keskushyökkääjä Breon Allen taisteli kentällä kolmen neljänneksen ajan, mutta lopulta yhdysvaltalainen jäi kentän pintaan vaarattoman näköisen taklaustilanteen seurauksena eikä palannut enää kentälle. Vaikuttaa siltä, että Wolverinesin suuret haasteet vahvistustensa kanssa jatkuvat.

Paras osa Ahmojen pelissä lauantaina oli nuorten tukimiesten esiinmarssi. Erityisesti Aleksi Kylli tuntui ehtivän taklaamaan mukaan kaikkiin tilanteisiin. Myös Viljami Rautavirta, Willy Lindfors ja Onni Soininen säestivät rinnalla hyvällä tasolla. Kyllin kahdeksan taklausta nostivat nuorta miestä Wolverinesin taklauspörssissä kohisten ylöspäin, mutta henkilökohtainen onnistuminen ei miestä liiemmin hymyilyttänyt ottelun jälkeisessä haastattelussa.

Kuopio Steelers juhlii 30-vuotista taivaltaan lauantaina Väinölänniemelle tositoimissa. Juhlaottelussa vastustajaksi saapuu Helsinki Wolverines, jolla on huonoja muistoja edelliseltä Kuopion vierailultaan.

Kotijoukkue Steelers lähtee lauantain peliin ennakkosuosikin paikalta. Joukkue on ottanut kolme näyttävää voittoa, mutta on toistaiseksi pelannut ainoastaan pohjalaisjoukkueita vastaan. Wolverinesin lähtökohdat kampailuun ovat haastavammat. Neljästä pelistä kolme on päättynyt tappioon ja voittosarakkeeseen on ylletty ainoastaan kertaalleen sarjanousijaa vastaan viimeisen minuutin kirimaalilla. Oman mausteensa peliin tulee tuomaan Wolverinesin tuore pelinrakentaja Jordan Williams.

Steelersilla vakuuttava alku sarjassa

Steelers on aloittanut mestaruutensa puolustamisen vakuuttavasti. Alkukauden peleissä joukkue on edennyt peleissään komealla 423 jaardi keskiarvolla ja antanut vastustajan vallata kenttätilaa keskimäärin ainoastaan 173 jaardin verran. Kaikkiaan hyökkäysjaardeja joukkueelle on kertynyt 1271, joista 778 kerätty juoksupelein. Kuopiolaisilla on heittää kentälle vaarallinen keskushyökkääjäkaksikko Le’Anthony Reasnover ja Tuukka Lehtonen, joista Reasnover on edennyt peleissä 131 jaardin juoksukeskiarvolla ja ehtinyt tekemään kolmessa pelissään jo kuusi touchdownia. Wolverinesin nuorella frontilla tulee olemaan hikinen iltapäivä Vänärillä keskushyökkääjäkaksikon pysäyttämiseksi.

Wolverines ei voi lähteä puolustamaan yksinomaan juoksua, koska kuopiolaisten pelinrakentaja Joey Bradley on osoittautunut mainioksi heittopelin johtajaksi. Bradley on onnistunut heitoissaan 66,7 % tarkkuudella ja ottelukohtainen ilmasillan etenemiskeskiarvo on 164 jaardia per peli. Heittojen suosikkikohteena on ollut toistaiseksi Jefferson Alexandre.

Steelersin päävalmentaja Pekka Utriainen on tyytyväinen alkukauden tilanteeseen ja kertoo seuran verkkosivuilla, miten hyvää meininkiä saadaan siirrettyä peleihin onnistumisiksi:

-Joukkue on hyvässä tilassa juuri nyt ja sitä tunnetilaa haluamme pitää yllä. Ainoa tapa edetä on pitää leuka rinnassa ja tehdä asioita kuten tähänkin saakka. Rutiinit ovat urheilijan paras henkinen valmentaja, mutta niitä rutiineja on meidän valmentajien sopivasti pystyttävä maustamaan joka viikko

Pelin kysymysmerkki kuopiolaisille on Wolverinesin uusi pelinrakentaja, mutta usko omaan tekemiseen Utriaisella on vahva:

-Varsinaisesti emme tiedä uudesta pelinrakentajasta mitään, joten valmistautuminen on haaste. Williams vaikuttaa kovalta urheilijalta, joka pystyy omilla juoksuillaan tekemään pelejä, joten siinä kohtaa ero edeltäjään ei ole suuri. Jokaisen pelaajan täytyy hoitaa omat vastuunsa puolustuksessa tunnollisesti ja voittaa aina se oma 1vs1 tilanne. Samoin kuin jokaisessa pelissä.

Tähtipelaajien pelaaminen epävarmaa

Wolverines on ilmoittanut ennakkoon kaksi yhdysvaltalaista tähtipelaajaansa epävarmojen listalle lauantain peliin. Keskushyökkääjä Breon Allenin loukkaantuminen on ollut ahmoille alkukaudesta kohtalokasta ja nyt epävarmaksi on ilmoitettu myös puolustuksen Dejion Lynch. Mikäli molemmat ovat poissa pelaavasta kokoonpanosta tulee helsinkiläisille haastava iltapuhde Väinölänniemellä.

Wolverinesin Breon Allen on ehtinyt pelaamaan ainoastaan yhden täysimittaisen vaahteraliigapelin, mutta joukkueen juoksutilastoissa hänen jaardimääränsä on yhä lähes kaksi kertaa suurempi, kuin koko muun hyökkäyskaluston yhteenlaskettu juoksuetenemismäärä (106/37). Mikäli Allen ei pelaa, tulee Steelers-puolustus todennäköisesti keskittymään lähes yksinomaan uuden pelinrakentajan Jordan Williamsin heittouhan karsimiseen.

Viimeisissä peleissä Wolverinesin laitahyökkääjistä Curtis Slater on onnistunut tekemään akrobaattimaisia kiinniottoja pitkistä peleistä ja avauspelit väliin jättänyt Phung Ngyen on tehnyt onnistuneen paluun pelikentille laiturin paikalla. Onnistuakseen Vänärillä joukkueesta on löydyttävä onnistumisia laajemmalla rintamalla ja myös muiden laitahyökkääjien on liimattava pallon näppeihinsä aiempaa tehokkaammin.

Joukkueiden edellinen kohtaaminen tapahtui Lahdessa Vaahteramaljassa, jolloin Steelers vei voiton lukemin 21-0. Se Wolvojen näkökulmasta murheellinen edellinen Väinölänniemen vierailu päättyi murskalukemiin 70-6 ja johti muutoksiin joukkueessa.
