Steelers - Royals 28.08.2020

Perjantain Vaahteraliigakamppailun lähtöasetelmat olivat herkulliset. Joukkue, joka voittaa pelin on runkosarjan voittaja vuonna 2020. Pelistä ei kuitenkaan muodostunut sarjan klassikkoa Steelersin alkuvaiheen ylivoiman takia.

Kuopio Steelers lähti illan kamppailuun vahvalla sykkeellä saavuttaen ensimmäisen neljänneksen aikana 21-0 johdon. Puoliaikaan mennessä peli oli tilanteessa 35-3 ja käytännössä runkosarjan voitto näytti karkaavan kuopiolaisille. Royals esitti ottelun jälkimmäisellä puoliskolla kirikykyään kirjaten lopulta taululle 30 pistettä. Steelersille riitti 55 pistettä ja joukkue oli nostanut jalkansa kaasulta jo hyvissä ajoin ennen pelikellon loppuun kulumista.

Wasa Royals on tällä kaudella erikoistunut hitaisiin alkuihin. Perjantai ei tuonut tähän poikkeusta ja vaasalaiset päästivät vastustajan tällä kertaa tavoittamattomiin, ennen kuin joukkueen onnistui saamaan pisteitä taululle. Markus Perssonin suihkukomennus ottelun ensimmäisellä neljänneksellä sekoitti Royals-puolustuksen pelisuunnitelmaa melkoisesti ja vastustaja rokotti armotta syntyneeseen aukkoon puolustuksessa.

Ottelun lopputulos imartelee vaasalaisia. Viimeisellä neljänneksellä Steelers pelasi aikaa ja Royalsin Alpha Jalloh sai vapauden kirmata kentällä kolme lohtu-touchdownia kaunistelemaan numeroita tulostaululla. Kaikkiaan huikeita yksilösuorituksia esittänyt Jalloh keräsi pelissä 349 jaardia kun mukaan lasketaan juoksut (186y), kiinniotot sekä potkujen palautukset. Royals pelinrakentaja Brandon Gwinner jätti kentän toisen puoliajan alussa ja miestä tuurasivat vuorotellen Jalloh sekä Nico Barrow. Kaikki Royalsin touchdownit syntyivät peleillä, joiden aikana Gwinner ei ollut kentällä.

Royals ei tarjonnut perjantaina Steelersille runkosarjan voittotaistelun arvoista taistelua. Tappion myötä joukkueen välierävastustajaksi asettuu Helsinki Wolverines. Runkosarjan kakkossija antaa vaasalaisille kotiedun ja Vaahteraliigan toinen välieräpeli tullaan pelaamaan Kaarlen kentällä 6. syyskuuta klo 16.30 alkaen.

Steelers halusi voittaa

Ottelun alla esiintyi spekulaatioita siitä, haluaako jompikumpi joukkueista taktikoida itselle mieluisen välierävastuksen seuraavalle viikonlopulle. Steelers-päävalmentaja Utriainen kertoi ottelua alustavassa haastattelussa joukkueensa janoavan historiansa ensimmäistä runkosarjan voittoa ja tämä näkyi otteissa kentällä.

Pelinrakentaja Seth Peters pääsi pelaamaan mieluisissa olosuhteissa ja heitti ottelussa 259 jaardia, joilla kuusi touchdownia. Maaleista menivät tasan 3-3 Max Zimmermanin ja Tino Ndongon kesken. Jaardeissa saksalainen kepitti niukasti Ndongon luvuin 93-92. Steelersin tähtikeskushyökkääjä Lamar Carswell kantoi palloa ottelun ensimmäisellä puoliskolla ainoastaan seitsemän kertaa keräten 9,9 jaardin keskiarvolla yhteensä 79 jaardia. Carswell ei käynyt kentällä pelin toisella puoliskolla.

Varsinkin ottelun alussa Steelersin puolustuksen frontti kohteli kaltoin vastustajan hyökkäyslinjaa sekä palloa hallussaan pitäviä hyökkääjiä. Royals-pelaaja taklattiin aloituslinjan takana yhteensä kymmenen kertaa. Eniten pysäytyksiä kirjattiin AJ Wentlandille, joka kartutti tilastojaan kymmenellä taklauksella. Puolustuksen koordinaattori Petri Pellinen peluutti miehistöään laajalla rintamalla ja peräti 18 Steelers-pelaajaa onnistui kirjaamaan merkintöjä taklaustilastoihin.

Runkosarjan voitto tuo Steelersille kaivatun kolmannen kotiottelun Väinölänniemelle. Lauantaina 5.9. välierässä vastaan asettuu Seinäjoki Crocodiles – ainoa joukkue, joka onnistui kukistamaan kuopiolaiset runkosarjassa.

Vaahteraliigan Friday Night Lights pelissä ratkaistaan, kuka nousee runkosarjan ykkösjoukkueeksi kaudella 2020. Steelersilla ja Royalsilla on kummallakin alla tappio edelliseltä kierrokselta.

Liigan pudotuspeleihin on hyvä lähteä voitto taskussa. Molemmilla illan joukkueilla on tähän mahdollisuus, kun toisessa vaakakupissa on tarjolla kahden pelin tappioputki. Kotijoukkue Steelers on tunnetusti vahva erityisesti kotikentällään, mutta kausi 2020 on osoittanut, että ennakkoasetelmat eivät paina missään, kun päätuomari viheltää pilliin pelin aloittamiseksi.

Kuopio Steelers kärsi kirvelevän tappion Seinäjoella lauantaina. Joukkue ei päässyt missään vaiheessa totutulle tasolleen märällä nurmikentällä pelatussa ottelussa. Erityisesti keskushyökkääjä Lamar Carswell kärsi olosuhteista eikä päässyt pakoon hyvän pelin pelanneilta Crocodiles-puolustajilta. Joukkue on saanut hyvän harjoitusviikon alleen ja päävalmentaja Pekka Utriainen myöntää seuran verkkosivuilla kauden ensimmäisen tappion johtuneen pitkälti huonosta keskittymisestä. Joukkuehan oli edellisellä kierroksella kylvettänyt Wolverinesia lukemin 70-6. Perjantaina palataan perusasioihin ja Utriainen odottaa, että tässäkin pelissä ratkaisu löytyy isojen miesten painista:

-Ottelun ratkaisua kannattaa odottaa linjapelistä. Royals-hyökkäys on todennäköisesti kehitellyt tähänkin peliin jotain uutta mihin emme ole pystyneet valmistautumaan, mutta ottelun voittanee se kumpi vie taistelun linjoissa.

Steelers lähtee ottelun käytännössä samalla kokoonpanolla kuin Seinäjoella. Puolustuslinjassa Timi Tuominen on nostettu avaajien listalle korvaten Jani Lindqvistin, jonka nimi löytyy kuitenkin pelaavasta rosterista. Pelätty tukimieskolmikko Wentland-King-Radji jatkaa omilla paikoillaan linja takana.

Riittääko Royalsin materiaali?

Kauden yllättäjäjoukkue Wasa Royals saapuu Kuopioon taistelemaan runkosarjan voitosta, Joukkue pelaa ottelusta toiseen kapealla miehistöllään, mutta voittoja on kasassa kolme neljästä aiemmasta pelistä. Kuten vastustaja Steelersilla, myös Royalsilla on alla kirvelevä tappio Roostersille.

Royals-pelinrakentaja Brandon Gwinner on juossut pelaamissaan otteluissa lähes 100 jaardin ottelukeskiarvolla ja on joukkueen keskushyökkääjä Tom Suostetta edellä sekä edetyissä jaardeissa, että juoksumäärissä. Perjantaina Royalsin juoksua vastaan asettuu sarjan pelottavin tukimies-trio, jolloin myös Gwinnerin heittokädelle löytyy käyttöä. Laitahyökkääjä Alpha Jalloh on kaikissa peleissä tuplattu mies mutta joukkueensa onneksi ryhmityksen toiselta laidalta löytyy varmanäppinen Nicholas Peterson. Molemmilla laitureilla on tilastoihin kirjattuna tähän mennessä 18 kiinniottoa.

Wasa Royals on pelannut kaikki kautensa Vaahteraliigassa tiiviillä rosterilla, jossa varamiehiä ei ole liiaksi eri pelipaikoille. Tämäkään kausi ei tee asiassa poikkeusta ja perjantaina Kuopioon matkaa 30 miehen vahvuinen rosteri, jossa useampikin pelaaja on statukseltaan epävarma. Joukkue taistelee perjantaina kynsin hampain runkosarjan voitosta, mutta Wolverinesin torstainen voitto Roostersista merkitsee sitä, että tappiollakin vaasalaiset ovat jo varmoja välieräpelin isäntiä syyskuun ensimmäisenä viikonloppuna.
