Steelers voittoon kotiavauksessaan

Kuopio Steelers (2-1) avasi kotiottelunsa 35-9 (21-7) voitolla Vaasa Royalsista (1-2). Vaasan puolustus onnistui pitämään Steelersin hyökkäyksen kokonaisjaardit 232 jaardissa ja juoksujaardit yhdeksässä, mutta ei tästä huolimatta onnistunut pitämään kotijoukkuetta pois maalialueelta. Steelers hyökkäys pelinrakentaja Seth Petersin johdolla naputti ensimmäisellä neljänneksellä 21 pistettä ja näytti menevän jo menojaan, mutta Royals puolustus taisteli hyvin ja piti joukkueensa näennäisesti hengissä. Kun hyökkäys ei kuitenkaan saanut yhtä maalia enempää aikaiseksi, jäivät sarjapisteet selvänumeroisesti Kuopioon.

Kuopion hyökkäyksessä pelinrakentaja Peters heitti 223 jaardia 25 heitolla ja kolme maalia. Ykköskohteena oli Tino Ndongo, jonka kuudella kiinniotolla joukkue eteni 88 jaardia ja vieraili kahteen kertaan maalialueella. Royals pelinrakentaja Diondre Borel ei tuntunut löytävän rytmiä missään vaiheessa peliä ja onnistui vain kymmenessä heitossa 33:sta. Kun kolme heittoa lipsahti vastustajalle, ei iltaa voi pitää onnistuneena. Borelin puolustukseksi pakko kuitenkin sanoa, että kiinniottajat eivät juurikaan auttaneet pelinrakentajaa heittojen pudotessa käsistä ja kaksi syötönkatkoistakin karkasi Steelers puolustajille kiinniottajan käsistä. Juoksupeleissä Vaasa piti hyvin Steelers keskushyökkääjä Gerard Johnsonin kurissa. 22 juoksuyrityksellä eteenpäin mentiin vain 49 jaardia. Johnson teki kuitenkin yhden maalin juoksuillaan. Vaasan Tom Suoste rynni pallon kanssa eteenpäin 68 jaardia 16 juoksuyrityksellä, muttei onnistunut nostamaan joukkueen hyökkäystä.

Puolustusten puolella nähtiin ruotsalaispelaajien urakointia. Vaasan kulmapuolustaja Markus Persson ylsi 10 taklaukseen. Näistä valtaosa syntyi juoksupeleissä ja kahdella taklauksella aloituslinjan takapuolella Persson työnsi Steelersiä taaksepäin 18 jaardia. Persson sai hyvää tukea normaalisti hyökkäyksen puolella pelaavalta ja ottelussa kahteen suuntaan raataneelta Carlos Carrascolta, joka keräsi 7,5 taklausta ja yhden säkityksen. Steelersin tukimies Mattias Eriksson taklasi eniten kotijoukkueesta (10,5) ja kotijoukkueen Donovan Hayden oli toiseksi ahkerin 9,5 taklauksellaan. Hayden keräsi tilastoihinsa jälleen myös yhden pelinrakentaja säkin. Kuumassa säässä Royals ei auttanut menestymishaaveitaan ottamalla 13 pientä rangaistusta pääasiassa pelin viivyttämisistä ja paitsioista. Kun Steelers puolustus riisti pallon vielä neljä kertaa itselleen, ei voittajasta jäänyt tänään epäselvyyttä. Vaahteraliiga jatkuu lauantaina Porvoossa, jossa keskuskentällä Butchersin (1-1) vieraaksi saapuu Seinäjoki Crocodiles (1-1). Royals jatkaa kauttansa ensi torstaina Helsingissä Wolverinesin (2-0) vieraana ja Steelers puolestaan saa ensi lauantaina kotikentällään vastaan Tampere Saintsin (0-2)

Pois:

Perjantaina Kuopio Steelers (1-1) saa aina aurinkoiselle Väinölänniemen kentälle vastaansa Vaasa Royalsin (1-1). Iso kysymysmerkki ottelulle on missä kunnossa on viime viikolla huilannut Steelers pelinrakentaja Seth Peters. Vaikka kuopiolaishyökkäys pystyikin etenemään Porvoota vastaan, ei pelissä nähty sellaista ilotulitusta mitä Petersin johdolla on ollut lupa odottaa. Jos Peters ei pelaa, helpottuu Vaasan puolustus pelaaminen, kun pelinrakentajana tuuraavan Gerard Johnsonin heitoissa ei ihan Petersia vastaavaa tarkkuutta viime ottelun perusteella ole.

Royals aloitti kauden vahvasti kaatamalla Porvoo Butchersin (1-1), mutta jäi hieman lähtötelineisiin sunnuntaina Helsinki Roostersin (1-1) vieraana. Nyt matka vie Kuopioon ja joukkueen on syytä löytää virtaa peliinsä ottelun alusta alkaen mikäli mielii sarjapisteet mukanaan viemään. Molemmat joukkueet ovat samassa tilanteessa, yksi voitto ja yksi tappio, joten ottelu antaa hieman suuntaa molempien joukkueiden osalta siitä mihin suuntaan tämä kausi on menossa.
