Steelers–Crocodiles 19.08.2018

Kuopion Steelersin hyökkäys rullasi tehokkaasti ilman pelikiellossa ollutta Charles Wortiakin, ja sarjakkonen kaatoi Seinäjoen Crocodilesin 44-28 (27-14) sunnuntaina Väinölänniemellä. Tappio tiesi Crocodilesille putoamista pois kamppailusta liigan viimeisistä pudotuspelipaikoista. Steelersin sijoitukselle ottelulla ei ollut merkitystä, sillä sarjanousija on jo varmistanut kakkossijansa.

Crocodiles oli liikenteessä aivan erilaisella peli-ilmeellä kuin 7-71-tappioon päättyneessä maanantaisessa Roosters-ottelussa. Crocodilesin puolustus ei kuitenkaan missään vaiheessa löytänyt aseita Steelersin tasaisesti edenneen hyökkäyksen pysäyttämiseen. Kuopiolaiset tekivät pisteitä seitsemän kertaa kahdeksalla ensimmäisellä hyökkäysvuorollaan, eikä vieraiden hyökkäys pystynyt pysymään tuossa tahdissa mukana koko matkaa.

Toisen neljänneksen puolivälissä tilanne oli vielä 14-14, mutta Crocodiles ei onnistunut hyödyntämään onnistuneen onside-potkun ja Steelersin pallonmenetyksen tuomia hyökkäysvuorojaan. Steelers nousi 30-14-johtoon, mutta Christian Powell toi touchdownillaan vieraat vielä kahdeksan pisteen päähän kolmannen neljänneksen lopulla. Justin Bellin kaksi päätösneljänneksen juoksutouchdownia sinetöivät pelin lopullisesti Steelersille.

Ndongo nappasi 12 kiinniottoa

Joukkueiden aiemman kohtaamisen tavoin Bell loisti jälleen Crocodilesia vastaan. Hän juoksi 15 yrityksellä 104 jaardia ja kolme TD:tä. Maajoukkuelaitahyökkääjä Tino Ndongo jatkoi vahvoja otteitaan, ja otti kiinni 12 Seth Petersin heittoa. Niillä hän eteni 169 jaardia ja teki tärkeän 27-14-touchdownin toisen neljänneksen viimeisellä minuutilla.

Ndongon kiinniottomäärä sivuaa liigan tämän kauden yhden ottelun ennätystä. Samaan ovat aiemmin yltäneet Roostersin Adam Connette ja Crocodilesin Anthony Brooks.

Peters heitti kovalla onnistumisprosentilla (20/26) 263 jaardia ja kaksi touchdownia. Ilman pistetilastonsa ykkösnimeä Charles Wortia pelannut Steelers jakoi vastuuta hyökkäyksessään laajalle rintamalle. Juoksupeleissä palloa kantoi viisi eri pelaajaa, kiinniottoja kirjattiin kuudelle pelaajalle.

Crocodilesin Christian Powell uurasti jälleen hurjalla tahdilla. Hän kantoi palloa 24 kertaa 126 jaardin edestä ja otti lisäksi seitsemän heittoa joilla eteni 111 jaardia. Pelinrakentaja Jonathan Baker heitti 247 jaardia ja kolme touchdownia.

Puolustuksen puolella Steelersin Donavan Hayden oli ottelun ehdoton ykkösnimi. Hän hääri eri puolilla kenttää pysäyttämässä Crocodilesin pallonkantajia, ja keräsi 14,5 taklausta. Steelersin puolustuksesta puuttuivat edelleen maajoukkuemiehet Santeri Inkinen ja Juuso Laherma.

Crocodiles päättää kautensa ensi viikon lauantaina kotiottelulla Saintsia vastaan. Edes voitto tuosta ottelusta ei riitä nostamaan joukkuetta pudotuspeleihin. Tasapisteissä katsotaan ensin joukkueiden keskinäisiä otteluita, sen jälkeen voitettujen joukkueiden voittoprosenttia, sen jälkeen vierasvoittojen määrää. Crocodilesilla ei ole enää mahdollisuutta avata vierasvoittotiliään, kun taas Royalsilla ja Butchersilla on vähintään yksi vierasvoitto tilillään runkosarjan päätteeksi.

Myös Steelersillä on runkosarjassa jäljellä enää kotiottelu Saintsia vastaan. Kuopiolaisten runkosarja päättyy 30.8.

Välierien päivämäärät on lyöty lukkoon. Steelers kohtaa runkosarjan kolmosen Kuopiossa sunnuntaina 9.9., Roosters puolestaan isännöi runkosarjan nelosta 8.9. Molemmat ottelut alkavat kello 15.30.

Heikon alkukauden jälkeen mukaan pudotuspelikamppailuun noussut Seinäjoen Crocodiles kohtaa saman viikon aikana sekä liigaa ylivoimaisesti johtavan Roostersin sekä sarjakakkosen Kuopion Steelersin. Maanantaina Roosters pieksi Crocodilesin perusteellisesti lukemin 71-7, mutta sunnuntailta voi odottaa tiukempaa kamppailua. Kesäkuun lopulla Steelers puristi Seinäjoelta niukan 41-39-voiton.

Crocodilesille lyhyt viikko tuo luonnollisesti lisähaastetta ennen Savoon matkaamista. Helsingin-reissulta Crocodiles saapui Pohjanmaalle kolmen maissa tiistaiaamuna.

— Vedimme keskiviikkona kevyet harjoitukset ja filmisession. Perjantaina viimeiset täyden kontaktin harjoitukset ja lauantaina kävelemme kuvioita läpi, päävalmentaja Michael Mattingly kertoo joukkueen ohjelmasta.

— Onhan tämä tärkeä rankka viikko, mutta emme tee siitä ongelmaa. Ainakin pääsemme korjaamaan maanantain virheitämme tositilanteessa pian, ensimmäistä kauttaan Crocodilesia valmentava Mattingly kääntää tilanteen positiivisen puolelle.

— Roosters-pelistä ei ole paljoa sanottavaa, muuta kuin että se herätti meidät siihen että meidän pitää saada tekemisemme parempaan kuntoon. Pudotuspelipaikka on yhä omissa käsissämme.

Roosters-pelin kesken jättänyt pelinrakentaja Jonathan Baker on sunnuntaina pelikunnossa.

— Hänet jätettiin sivuun varotoimenpiteenä. Jonathan on harjoitellut normaalisti koko viikon.

Pelinrakentajavaihdos käänsi kurssin

Baker on ollut suuri syy siihen, millä Crocodilesin liki puolitoista kautta kestänyt alavire on kääntynyt parempaan päin. Viime kaudella Crocodiles jäi Vaahteraliigassa jumboksi ja ykkösdivisioonaan putoaminenkin kävi lähellä. Tämän kauden joukkue aloitti kolmella tappiolla. Sen jälkeen heikosti esiintynyt pelinrakentaja Ben Wilkerson vaihdettiin Bakeriin. Bakerin ajan saldona on kaksi tappiota Roostersille, niukka tappio Steelersille sekä voitot Royalsista ja Butchersista.

Bakerin heittojaardien määrä per peli (221) on liigan kolmanneksi paras. Hän on heittänyt 15 touchdownia ja viisi syötönkatkoa

— Jonathan on ottanut suuren roolin. Hän kutsuu pelejä ja on muuttanut blokkaussysteemiämme ja osin myös heittokuvioitamme. Hän tehnyt myös Christianin (keskushyökkääjä Powell) työn helpommaksi, kun vastustajan puolustuksen pitää kunnioittaa heittopeliämme. Voittosaldomme ei kerro koko totuutta siitä, miten hyvä joukkue olemme tällä hetkellä, Mattingly vakuuttaa.

Hänen mukaansa suurin muutos joukkueen hyökkäyspelissä on se, että Powellia on käytetty eri pelipaikoilla aiempaa enemmän.

— Myös hyökkäyksen linjamme peli on parantunut kauden edetessä. Patrick Wilsonin tulo laitahyökkääjäksi on myös auttanut heittopeliämme.

— Puolustuksemme peli on ollut vuoristorataa koko kauden. Meillä on puolustuksessa paljon suomalaispelaajia joilla ei ollut kauheasti liigakokemusta. Takakentän pelaaminen on ollut ongelma, mutta se on parantunut, Mattingly analysoi.

Paluu Suomeen tammikuussa

26-vuotias Mattingly on tiettävästi liigahistorian nuorin päävalmentaja. Hän on montaa joukkueen pelaajaa nuorempi.

— Sillä ei ole ollut mitään merkitystä. Pelaajien, muiden valmentajien ja seuraväen kunnioitus pitää aina tienata joka tapauksessa.

Sen hän on myös tienannut, sillä Mattingly solmi kesällä jatkosopimuksen Crocodilesin kanssa.

— Lähden kotiin Yhdysvaltoihin kauden jälkeen, ja palaan Seinäjoelle tammikuussa. Ensi kauden kannalta on tärkeää että olen täällä jo niin aikaisessa vaiheessa. Meillä on paljon nuoria pelaajia ja pääsen tekemään heidän kanssaan töitä jo talvella.

— Liigan taso on ollut paljon parempi kuin mitä odotin. Pelaajien lajitietämys on todella hyvää. Täällä on monia nuoria pelaajia jotka voisivat pelata USA:ssa ja lisäksi kokeneita pelaajia jotka todella tuntevat lajin, Mattingly kehuu.

Baker ja Bell loistivat ensimmäisessä kohtaamisessa

Sunnuntain ottelun kotijoukkue Steelers on pelannut vahvan kauden ja on sarjassa kakkosena voitettuaan kahdeksasta ottelustaan kuusi. Molemmat tappiot ovat tulleet Roostersia vastaan. Steelers on jo varmistanut kakkossijan ja välierien kotiedun. Kahdella viimeisellä pudotuspelipaikalla ovat kolmen voiton joukkueet Royals ja Butchers, ja voitolla Crocodiles nousisi tasapisteisiin vaasalaisten ja porvoolaisten kanssa.

— Steelers on hyvä joukkue jolla on voittamisen kaava kasassa. Lähdemme peliin samalla suunnitelmalla kuin viimeksi, toki muutamien pienten muokkausten kera, Mattingly kertoo.

Joukkueiden edellisessä kohtaamisessa Crocodilesin Jonathan Baker heitti viisi touchdownia ja liki 400 jaardia. Steelersin Justin Bell oli Crocodiles-puolustukselle paha pideltävä. Hän juoksi 167 jaardia ja kaksi touchdownia ja eteni lisäksi kolmella kiinniotolla 45 jaardia. Ottelu ratkesi vasta 19 sekuntia ennen loppua Steelersin Tino Ndongon kiinniottotouchdowniin. Loukkaantumisen takia jälkijunassa kautensa startannut maajoukkuelaitahyökkääjä on ollut kovassa iskussa. Pelaamissaan neljässä ottelussa hän on ottanut 26 kiinniottoa ja tehnyt niistä kuusi touchdownia.

— Meillä oli viime kerralla yllättävän suuria vaikeuksia Seinäjokea vastaan. Nyt uskon, että hyökkäyksemme ja etenkin puolustuksemme toimii sujuvammin. Luulen, että Porvoon peli vapautti meidän pelaamista entisestään, Steelersin puolustuksen linjamies Perttu Kosonen sanoo Steelersin nettisivujen ennakossa.

— Meidän puolustuksemme on saatava Seinäjoen juoksu pysäytettyä heti pelin alussa, sillä Powell kyllä juoksee, jos hänen antaa juosta. Heittopelissä Seinäjoen rissut on saatava kuriin ja uskon puolustuksemme siihen pystyvän. Samoin uskon, että puolustuksen linjamme pystyy antamaan painetta. Olemme nyt saaneet hyvin ajettua Petri Pellisen puolustuksen sisään ja aiomme jatkaa samalla tavalla kuin Porvoossa.
