Steelers–Butchers 16.06.2018

Lauantaiottelu Kuopio Steelersin ja Porvoo Butchersin välillä oli varsin vivahteikas. Kotijoukkueen Johannes Jauhiainen iski toisella neljänneksellä 20 pistettä ja niiden myötä Steelers eteni 34–17 (20–3) -voittoon.

Steelers aloitti ottelun varsin tahmeasti. Hyökkäys ei tuottanut uusia yrityksiä, vaan pelinrakentaja Seth Petersillä oli jatkuvasti kiire ja Butchers onnistui pimentämään nopean heittopelin. Kun lisäksi Steelers epäonnistui kerran aloituspotkun palautuksessa ja kerran lentopotkussa, sai vierasjoukkue hyviä tilanteita toistuvasti.

Mutta eipä ollut porvoolaistenkaan hyökkäys parhaimmillaan. Hyvistä tilanteista huolimatta ainoastaan Joni-Petteri Malkan potkun tuottamat kolme pistettä koristivat Butchersin pistesaraketta avausneljänneksen jälkeen. Kerran epäonnistui kenttäpotkumaali ja kerran Butchersilta loppuivat yritykset kesken kahdeksan jaardin päästä maalialueesta.

Toinen neljännes oli Steelersin juhlaa. Roman Runner piti Charles Wortin kurissa, mutta toisella laidalla Johannes Jauhiaiselle porvoolaiset eivät löytäneet sopivaa puolustajaa. Seurauksena Jauhiainen teki neljänneksen aikana kolme touchdownia ja potki itse kahden perään lisäpisteen haarukkaan. Näiden myötä Steelers johti tauolla 20–3.

Johannes Jauhiaisen kolmas touchdown-sivallus:

Avauspuoliajan suurin onnistuja oli kollektiivina Steelersin juoksupuolustus, joka sulki käytännössä kokonaan Darion Hallin juoksut. Ennen lauantaita Hall oli juossut yli kahdeksan jaardin keskiarvolla. Nyt pisin juoksu oli 11 jaardia ja keskiarvo vaivoin yli kolme jaardia.

Butchersin heittopeli oli edelleen ailahtelevaa. Janne Lehtinen onnistui kolmessa ensimmäisessä heitossaan, mutta sen jälkeen vain noin joka neljäs avauspuoliajan heitoista päätyi kiinniotoksi. Lisäksi kerran heiton katkaisi Santeri Inkinen ja kerran 16-vuotias Iiro Pekkarinen, joka koppasi laitahyökkääjästä kimmonneen pallon. Pekkarinen pelasi jälleen muutenkin erittäin ennakkoluulottomasti.

Bellin juoksut ratkaisevat pelin

Toisen puoliajan alussa Lehtisen heitot kuitenkin napsahtivat toistuvasti kohteisiinsa ja Butchers eteni nopeasti maalialueen läheisyyteen. Hall rynni pallon kanssa eteenpäin, mutta menetti otteen pelivälineestä. Butchersin onneksi Mikko Seppänen peitti pallon maalialueella. Tästä porvoolaisille ensimmäinen touchdown, jonka päätteeksi Malka potkaisi tilanteeksi 20–10.

Steelersin kuittaus tuli hetken päästä, kun Justin Bell juoksi kauden toisen touchdowninsa. Kun Jauhiainen onnistui Bellin juoksun jälkeen pistepotkussaan, oli tilanne 27–10. Näissä numeroissa päättyi ottelun kolmas neljännes. Butchers otti pelkästään Bellin maaliin päättyneen hyökkäysvuoron aikana kolme 15-jaardista rangaistusta ja koko ottelussa rangaistuksia kirjattiin vieraille 116 jaardia.

Päätösneljänneksellä näytti jo hetken siltä, että Steelers juoksee Butchersilta karkuun. Justin Bell ja Seth Peters toivat juoksuillaan kuopiolaiset iskuetäisyydelle, mutta vuoro kuitenkin lopulta päättyi Petersin heittämään syötönkatkoon, jonka otti porvoolaisten takamies Mitch Dalley.

Välähdys Justin Bellin nopeudesta:

Butchersin oli nyt pakko tehdä touchdown, ja siinä porvoolaisjoukkue myös onnistui. Pitkän vuoron päätteeksi Darion Hall kavensi, ja Malka potkun päätteeksi eroa oli enää kymmenen pistettä. Tämän jälkeen Butchers onnistui lyhyessä aloituspotkussaan ja sai pallon takaisin. Vuoro kuitenkin päättyi epäonnistuneeseen kenttäpotkumaaliin, mikä osaltaan mursi vierasjoukkueen selkärangan.

Bell otti lopullisesti ratkaisijan viitan itselleen halkaisemalla puolustuksen puolesta kentästä ja juoksemalla ottelun toisen touchdowninsa. Tämän jälkeen ottelussa ei enää pistesuorituksia nähty, ja peli päättyi siis lukemissa 34–17.

Justin Bellin juoksukeskiarvo oli lopulta komea, sillä yhdeksällä yrityksellä Bell juoksi 113 jaardia viimeisteli kaksi maalia. Näiden jaardien myötä Steelers voitti ottelun juoksujaardit lukemin 166–161, mihin moni ei olisi välttämättä ennen ottelua olisi uskonut.

Voiton myötä Steelers otti yksin haltuunsa liigan toisen sijan. Butchers jatkaa kolmantena.

Väinölänniemen stadion – se jota savolaislähteet kuvaavat aina aurinkoiseksi – toimii taistelutantereena lauantaina, kun Steelers (2-1) ja Butchers (2-1) iskevät yhteen. Ennen viikonloppua joukkueet ovat tasapisteissä toisena. Lauantain pelin panos on siten selvä: se kumpi Vänäriltä poistuu voittajana ottaa vahvan otteen kakkossijaan.

Steelersin valmistautuminen otteluun ei ole optimaalisimmalla tasolla, sillä joukkue palasi tappiollisen Roosters-ottelun jälkeen Kuopioon vasta tiistain vastaisena yönä. Pekka Utriaisen luotsaamat joukot ovat fyysisesti kovassa kunnossa, mutta kysymys kuuluukin, miten hyvin joukkue on päässyt sisäistämään porvoolaisten hyökkäyksen asettaman, poikkeuksellisen vahvan juoksuhyökkäyksen asettaman haasteen.

Täydellinen ei ole myöskään Butchersin lähtökohta tulevaan otteluun. Hyökkäyksen linjasta puuttuu edelleen maajoukkuemies Jari Mononen ja puolustuksesta puolestaan ovat sivussa sekä tukimies Sebastian Karbin että ulompi linjamies Ville Kurvinen. Karbin on yksi liigan parhaimmista pelipaikallaan ja viikko viikolta edistynyt Steelersin juoksupeli saattaa Karbinin poissa ollessa päästä juhlimaan uudella tasolla. Kurvista porvoolaiset olisivat puolestaan tarvinneet vikkelän pelinrakentaja Seth Petersin ansoittamiseen. Lisäksi monipuolinen Isaak Marshall puuttuu edelleen kokoonpanosta.

Miten Butchers puolustaa Steelersin heittopeliä?

Seth Peters heitti maanantaina Roostersia vastaan 301 jaardia ja neljä touchdownia. Nyt vastassa ei ole yhtä ahnasta puolustuksen linjaa (Roosters säkitti Petersin kuusi kertaa), joten Steelers-pelinrakentajalle voisi ennustaa rauhallisempaa iltaa toimistollaan. Johannes Jauhiainen ja kauden aikana jo yhdeksän touchdownia tehnyt Charles Wort ovat Petersin ykköskohteet. Petteri Vilpponen on edelleen sivussa ja mahdollisesti myös Juho Väisänen. Hyökkäyksen aloitukseen nousee saksalaissafety Alex Borgmann.

Butchersin puolustuksen koordinaattori Bill Moore – Warkaus Steelersin päävalmentaja kaudella 2002 – tullee laittamaan Roman Runnerin puolustamaan Charles Wortia vastaan. Tämän jälkeen katseet siirtyvät safetykaksikkoon Mitch Dalley ja Niko Roiko, joka on yksi tämän hetken parhaimmista takakentän kaksikoista. Roiko pysynee omalla paikallaan, puolustaa keskialueita ja toisinaan Väisästä tai muita slot-paikan laitahyökkääjiä. Dalley sen sijaan saatetaan hyvinkin nähdä ajoittain myös kulmapuolustajana, mikäli vikkeläkinttu J. Jauhiainen pääsee irti omalla laidallaan.

Aku Uotilan juoksupeli on noussut viikosta toiseen yhä suuremmaksi aseeksi Steelersille, mistä kiitos kuuluu myös liian vähän gloriaa saaneelle hyökkäyksen linjalle. Maanantaina Helsingissä muutamat kuopiolaisten hyökkäysvuorot perustuivat siihen, että Uotila rynni pallon kanssa nelijaardisia siivuja. Peters, Justin Bell ja Ville Lindsten tuovat variaatioita juoksuun. Silti Steelersin on tilastojen valossa edelleen liigan heikoin juoksujoukkue.

Butchersin puolustuksen linja on Steelersiä vastaan suurimman haasteen edessä. Porvoolaisilla ei ole liikaa pelaajia kierrätykseen ja Steelersin nopea pelitahti aiheuttaa jo itsessään ylimääräisen haasteen.

Miten Steelers puolustaa Butchersin juoksupeliä?

Butchersin juoksut ovat olleet alkukaudesta täysin omalla tasollaan. Keskimäärin porvoolaiset etenevät maata pitkin hieman yli 200 jaardia (toisena Roosters, 143 jaardia). Yhden juoksuyrityksen keskiarvo Butchersilla on 6,7 jaardia, mikä on lähes kaksi jaardia suurempi luku kuin tässä tilastossa toisena olevalla Roostersilla.

Steelersin puolustuksen koordinaattori Andy Bezairen on keksittävä keinoja, miten kuopiolaiset pääsisivät mahdollisimman nopeasti kiinni Butchersin juoksupelin päähenkilöön, keskushyökkääjä Darion Halliin, joka on toistaiseksi taivaltanut pallo kainalossaan yli kahdeksan jaardin keskiarvolla. Kannattaa myös huomata, että porvoolaisten blokkaava keskushyökkääjä Sebastian Lindell on tällä hetkellä juoksutilastossa viidentenä. Lindellin juoksukeskiarvo on jopa Hallia parempi, 9,5 jaardia per yritys.

Kantasoluna Butchersin juoksupelille toimii hyökkäyksen linja, josta erityisesti sentteri Arttu Tennberg ja oikea tackle Pasi Lautala kuuluvat pelipaikkojensa parhaimmistoon.

Steelersin puolustus on perusfrontiltaan (3-3-5) hieman poikkeuksellinen, mikä saattaa tuottaa Butchersi linjalle tottumisvaikeuksia, vaikka Butchersin itsekin vähän vastaavaa etumuodostelmaa. Nähtäväksi jää, pitääkö Bezaire puolustuksensa tässä muotissa vai tullaanko näkemään uudistuksia lähellä aloituslijaa. Linjan keskustassa pelaavan Felix N´twan paluu pelikentälle tapahtuu varsin hyvään aikaan. Mielenkiintoista on myös nähdä, miten Donavan Hayden roolitetaan. Todennäköisesti yhdysvaltalainen pelaa nyt puhtaasti tukimiehenä.

Butchersin pelinrakentaja Janne Lehtinen ei heittänyt Butchersin edellisessä ottelussa toisella puoliajalla kertaakaan ja koko ottelussa ainoastaan kuusi kertaa. Heittojaardeissa porvoolaiset ovatkin liigan toiseksi viimeisenä, keskimäärin 108 jaardia ottelussa. Steelersin puolustusta vastaan on puolestaan heitetty toistaiseksi eniten. Tästätkin huolimatta kentällä tullaan näkemään hyviä taistelupareja ainakin, kun Butchersin palloa heittämään lähtee. Santeri Inkinen kohtaa laidalla joko Daniel Luoman tai Roman Runnerin. Toni Hartikainen asettuu todennäköisimmin Mikko Seppästä vastaan. Lisäksi Steelersin takakentällä vajaaksi jääneitä heittoja vaanii Justin Bell.
