Royals - Wolverines 06.09.2020

Vaasan Kaarlen kentällä pelattiin paikasta Lahden loppuotteluun. Royals ja Wolverines tarjoilivat yleisölle taistelun, jollaista tällä kaudella ei ole vielä nähty. Wolverines voitti trillerin 41-42 (31-25).

Vaahteraliigan runkosarjan 15 pelissä potkaistiin ainoastaan kaksi potkumaalia. Potkaisijat, Royalsin Santeri Kangas ja Wolverinesin Tom Jokinen olivat kumpainenkin onnistuneet monotuksissaan kertaalleen viidessä pelaamassaan pelissä. Sunnuntaina Kangas ja Jokinen olivat ratkaisemassa huippujännittävää välieräpeliä. Ottelu ratkesi Wolverines-potkaisija Tom Jokisen onnistumiseen ainoastaan 22 sekuntia ennen loppuvihellystä. Viisi minuuttia ennen loppuvihellystä Kangas siirsi vaasalaiset kahden pisteen johtoasemaan, joka kesti Jokisen potkuun saakka.

Wolverines teki heittomaaleja

Wolverines lähti otteluun pelaamaan tasapainoista hyökkäyspeliä. Ottelun alkupuoliskon maalit syntyivät kuitenkin suurten pelien tuloksina Sebastien Sagnen ja Micky Kyein pitkillä suorituksilla. Pelein edetessä Wolverinesn hyökkäyksen koordinaattori Kari Leivoja siirtyi lyhyempiin heittoihin ja pimennossa ollut akseli Sagne-Sebastien Forcier keskittyi ketjujen siirtelyyn rauhallisempaan tahtiin. Sagne oli onnistunut maalinteossa runkosarjan aikana ainoastaan kahdesti, mutta sunnuntain välieräpelissä mies tuplasi kauden maalisaldonsa. Myös Cedric Johnson onnistui maalinteossa kertaalleen. Runkosarjan aikana helsinkiläiset olivat onnistuneet heittomaaleissa ainoastaan neljästi huikeasta laiturikalustostaan huolimatta.

Puolustuksessa Wolverines keskittyi pysäyttämään vaasalaisten Alpha Jallohia. Ottelun lopputulos varmasti tyydyttää ahmapuolustajia, mutta Jallohille kirjattiin pelissä191 kiinniottojaardia ja kaksi touhdownia. Odotettu linjataistelu Wolverinesin Ville Valastin ja Royalsin Seppo Evwarayen kesken oli huikeaa katseltavaa. Evwarayen viimeisen pelin kunniaksi julistetaan tuo taistelu hänen voitokseen. Valasti ei onnistunut sunnuntaina yltämään samanlaiseen tykkisuoritukseen kuin Roosters-pelissä vaikka eihän hänekään suoritusta voi moittia.

Ottelu meinasi kääntyä Royalsille Wolverinesin heikkojen lisäpistepotkublokkaamisten seurauksena. Viimeisillä hetkillä blokkaava linja kuitenkin piti ja Jokinen pääsi ratkaisemaan ottelun.

Royals taisteli loppuun saakka

Royals lähti välieräpeliin hyvällä sykkeellä. Edellisten pelien heikot alut oli unohdettu ja puoliajalla vaasalaiset olivat kuuden pisteen johtoasemassa. Joukkue menetti toisella neljänneksellä hyökkäyksensä kanuunankuulana tunnetun Tomi Suosteen, mutta paikalle vaihdettu Nico Barrow paikkasi pallonkantajana onnistuneesti.

Alpha Jalloh teki kentällä kaiken, mitä yksi mies voi ottelun aikana tehdä, mutta voittoon asti Jallohin kolmella maalilla ei tällä kertaa ylletty. Pelinrakentaja Brandon Gwinner juoksi yhden maalin, mutta Wolverines-puolustus onnistui pitämään vikkelän yhdysvaltalaisen pienillä jaardiluvuilla.

Ottelun jälkimmäisellä puoliskolla Royalsin pelaajamateriaalin kapeus ja muutamat loukkaantumiset alkoivat näkyä pieninä virheinä kentällä. Mm. Rufain Khalifa joutui jättämään pelinsä keskeen sunnuntaina. Wasa Royals oli erittäin lähellä tämän kauden jymy-yllätystä. Tuskin kukaan, mukaan lukien Royalsin johtoporras, olisivat ennen kautta uskoneet, että nuorella ja kapealla pelaajamateriaalilla kolkutellaan Lahden stadionin portteja tosissaan. Kolmas sija ja pronssimitalit ovat hieno suoritus vaasalaisilta, vaikka ainakin sunnuntaina tuo ei taida lohduttaa ketään. Niin lähellä se lopulta oli.

Wasa Royals ja Helsinki Wolverines kohtaavat viikonlopun toisessa välieräpelissä. Joukkueiden keskinäisen runkosarjapelin vei Royals, mutta nousukuntoinen Wolverines on ottelun ennakkosuosikki.

Wolverines isännöi joukkueiden runkosarjakohtaamisessa Helsingissä. Voiton vei tuolloin Royals lukemin 26-36. Ottelussa helsinkiläisjoukkue koki useampia loukkaantumisia, joista pelinrakentaja Chris Forcierin poistuminen kentältä kahden neljänneksen ajaksi oli se ratkaisevin.

Nyt välieräpeliin lähdettäessä joukkueiden kuntokäyrät kulkevat eri suuntiin. Royals on hävinnyt kaksi viimeistä kamppailuaan (Roosters-Royals 49-30, Steelers-Royals 55-30) ja taistelee kentällä varsin kapealla rosterilla. Wolverines on voittanut runkosarjan kaksi viimeistä kamppailuaan (Butchers-Wolverines 20-41, Wolverines-Roosters 32-20) joista varsinkin Roosters-voitto oli omiaan nostamaan joukkueen itseluottamusta alkukauden vaikeuksista.

Royalsin pelissä Väinölänniemellä saatiin alkumakua siitä, mitä sunnuntaina tulemme todennäköisesti näkemään Kaarlen kentällä. Liigan vaarallisin pallollinen mies, Alpha Jalloh juoksi Kuopion pelin lopussa kentällä vastustamattomasti useissa eri rooleissa. Vaasalaisten pelinrakentaja Brandon Gwinner jätti pelin kesken ja hänen paikallaan pelasi Jallohin lisäksi Nico Barrow. Gwinnerin pelikunto on yksi välieräpelin ratkaisevista tekijöistä. Ottelun alla julkaistussa aloituskokoonpanossa yhdysvaltalainen on kirjattu mukaan avaavaan kokoonpanoon samoin, kuin Kuopion miehityksestä puuttunut takapuolustaja Rufail Khalifa,

Ottelua on mainostettu Seppo Evwarayen jäähyväispelinä Kaarlen kentällä. Sunnuntai ratkaisee pelaako yksi kaikkien aikojen suomalaispelaajista vielä yhden ylimääräisen pelin Lahdessa.

Wolverines hakee revanssia

Royals iski Wolverinesin hetkeksi kanveesiin elokuun alun voitollaan. Helsinkiläiset ovat parsineet pakkaansa kasaan runkosarjan aikana pelaaja- ja valmentajavaihdoksin ja ratkaisupelien kynnyksellä palaset alkavat loksahdella paikoilleen.

Wolverines puolustus on muuttanut ryhmityksiään materiaalilleen paremmin sopivaksi ja erityisesti puolustuslinjan Ville Valasti sekä nopeat ruotsalaiset Willian James ja Sebastian Gauthier ovat saaneet uuden pelikirjan myötä pelinsä aukeamaan erinomaiselle tasolle. Valasti kirjasi Roosters-pelissä huikeat 5 pelinrakentajasäkitystä ja James on noussut liigan taklaustilastoissa kohisten. Sunnuntain pelissä Royalsin Jalloh tulee olemaan erityisvartioinnissa ja todennäköisesti yksi varjostajista tulee olemaan toinen ruotsalaistukimiehistä.

Wolverinesilla on ollut läpi kauden haasteita saada juoksujaardeja muiden kuin pelinrakentaja Forcierin juoksemana. Roosters-pelissä vastuuta annettiin Micky Kyeille, joka kiitti ja kirjautti taululle kolme touhcdownia sekä 118 jaardia juoksuja. Viime pelien suorituksillaan Kyeitä voidaan pitää varteenotettavana juoksu-uhkana. Wolverines-hyökkäyksen suurimpia haasteita on saada palloja joukkueen tähtilaituri Sebastien Sagnelle. Forcierin ja Sagnen yhteispeli ei ole vielä toiminut ennakkoon odotetulla tavalla ja myös unnuntaina odotellaan ketsuppipullon korkin poksahtamista. Toistaiseksi Wolverinesille on kirjattu ainoastaan neljä heitto touchdownia, vaikka joukkueen laiturikaarti on täynnä nimekkäitä tähtipelaajia.

Sunnuntain ottelun rosterista ei löydy enää ainuttakaan maassa vieraillutta saksalaispelaajaa. Biberach Beaversin pelaajista rosterissa on jäljellä yhdysvaltalainen tukimiehen paikalle sijoitettu Oscar Vasquez-Dyer.
