Royals - Crocodiles 14.08.2020

Wasa Royals otti Pohjanmaan herruuden kukistamalla Seinäjoki Crocodilesin Botnia Bowlissa lukemin 42-32. Kolmella voitolla Royals on käytännössä varmistanut paikkansa play off peleissä.

Botnia Bowl 2020 oli hyökkäysten juhlaa. Molemmat joukkueet etenivät pallon kanssa yli 400 jaardia. mikäli pisteitä jaettaisiin jaardien perusteella, olisivat ne menneet Seinäjoelle. Royal voitti kuitenkin pisteidentekokilpailun ja otti samalla kolmannen perättäisen voiton Vaahteraliigassa nousten jälleen sarja paalupaikalle.

Royals on onnistunut saavuttamaan hyökkäykselleen tasapainoisen pelotteen, jossa tykinkuulamaisesti etenevä Tom Suoste rokottaa välittömästi vastustajia, mikäli puolustajat keskittyvät vaarallisen Alpha Jallohin varjostamiseen. Suoste raastoin kentällä perjantaina tilastoihinsa ”ainoastaan” 53 jaardia, mutta miehen merkitys kentällä oli suurempi kuin jaardit tai yksi juostu touchdown.

Alpha Jalloh oli myös perjantaina suurten pelien mies. Laitahyökkääjän kaksi maalia käytännössä ratkaisivat pelin vaasalaisille. Royals on erikoistunut yllättämään vastustajansa viime hetken rosteriyllätyksillään. Perjantain pelissä tässä roolissa oli veteraani puolustaja Thomas Ceken, joka palasi liigakentille näyttävästi kotiyleisön hurratessa Kaarlen kentän lehtereillä. Royalsin puolustuksen odotetuin kotidebytoija oli yhdysvaltalainen Zachary Blair, joka oli mies paikallaan, mutta ei erottunut rinnalla pelaavien tukimiesten joukosta.

Illan näyttävimmät suoritukset kirjattiin Crocodilesin keskushyökkääjä Christian Powelille. Väkivahva juoksukone eteni peleillään 352 jaardia irtautuen kolmasti maalintekoon vastustajien tuskaillessa taklaustensa kanssa. Powelin ylivoima ei kuitenkaan riittänyt perjantaina voittoon saakka ja Crocodiles ajauti tilanteeseen, jossa paikka play off peleissä saattaa olla kivisen tien takana.

Croco-puolustuksessa Jaska Värinen oli jälleen kerran joukkueensa tilastorohmu yhdeksällä taklauksellaan. Veikka Lehtonen säesti rinnalla 8,5 taklauksellaan. Perjantaina miesten huippusuorituksetkaan eivät kantaneet vierasjoukkuetta voittoon saakka.

Crocodilesilla tulee kahdessa viimeisessä ottelussaan vastaan Porvoo Butchers sekä kovakuntoinen Kuopio Steelers. Joukkueen on voitettava molemmat pelit haaveillakseen pelaamisesta jalkapalloa edes teoriassa myös syyskuussa.

Perjantai-iltana taistellaan Vaasassa Kaarlen kentällä Pohjanmaan jenkkifutisherruudesta ja Botnia Bowlin hallinnasta. Wasa Royals isännöi kotiyleisön edessä Seinäjoki Crocodilesia.

Lyhyt ja tiivis kausi tarjoaa jokaisella sarjakierroksella varsinaisia herkkupaloja. Vaasassa taistellaan jo tosissaan pudotuspelipaikkojen ohella välieräpelien kotiedusta. Lähempänä sellaista on tällä hetkellä puhtaasti sarjansa käynnistänyt Royals

Wasa Royals lähti kauteen varsin matalan profiilin joukkueena, mutta viimeisten kolmen viikon aikana paljon on tapahtunut ja samalla Royals on noussut taistelemaan tosissaan jopa runkosarjan voitosta. Mikäli puinen kiertopalkinto jää perjantaina Vaasaan, on joukkueen pudotuspelipaikka lähes varma.

Royals värväsi rosteriinsa sarjan siirtoikkunan karmeja hipoen kolme huikeaa vahvistusta. Nuori pelinrakentaja Brandon Gwinner on aloittanut erinomaisesti omaten kahden pelikierroksen jälkeen liigan parhaan heittojen onnistumisprosentin (60,0%). Maaginen Alpha Jalloh on sarjan kiinniottotilaston kakkosena ja osoittanut jälleen sen, että jokainen pallon kosketus saattaa johtaa päätyyn saakka. Royalsin kolmas amerikkalainen, Zachry Blair pelasi voitokkaassa Wolverines-pelissä säästellen, mutta ehti mm. blokkaamaan vastustajan lisäpisteyrityksen kertaalleen. Amerikkalaispelaajien osalta paketti Vaasassa on liigan parasta A-ryhmää.

Illan isäntäjoukkueen heikoin kohta löytyy rosterin kapeudesta. Tuuraajia on niukanlaisesti, mikäli joku avainpelaajista loukkaantuu. Juoksupeliin Royalsilla löytyy onneksi kaksi vahvaa muurinsärkijää, Tom Suoste ja Nico Barrow, joiden juoksu-uhka pelaa aikaa Gwinnerille onnistua heitoissaan. Toistaiseksi Vaasaa voidaan pitää korona-kesän suurimpana liigayllätyksenä

Christian Powell pääsi vauhtiin

Seinäjoki Crocodilesin kausi käynnistyi yskähdellen Helsingissä. Kotikentällä kakkoskierroksella saatiin kuitenkin balsamia kaikkiin mahdollisiin haavoihin. Viime kauden nelosen selkeä voitto hallitsevasta mestarijoukkueesta on nostanut seinäjokisten itsetunnon uusiin lukemiin. Erityisesti keskushyökkääjä Christian Powelin onnistuminen on merkki krokotiilien heräämisestä.

Crocodilesin walesilainen pelinrakentaja Spencer Cutlan on toistaiseksi sarjan QB-tilaston pohjilla onnistuttuaan kuljettamaan palloa ilmateitse peleissä 120 jaardin keskiarvolla. Peli-ilme toisella sarjakierroksella oli kuitenkin jo kirkastunut, joten illan vierasjoukkue on saamassa hyökkäystään tasapainoon. Osansa ryhtiliikkeessä on ollut toisen britin, Timothy Thomasin paluu joukkueeseen.

Crocodiles-puolustuksen ykkösnyrkkinä on tälläkin kaudella taklannut maamme tukimiesparhaimmistoon kuuluva Jaska Värinen. Värisellä on kasassa yhteensä 16 taklausta, joista peräti 15 on tehty soolona. Perjantaina on odotettavissa voimakasta juoksupeliä keskeltä ja sen torjumisessa suomalaistukimiehellä tulee olemaan suuri rooli.
