Crusaders – Wolverines 25.08.2022

Helsinki Wolverines voitto United Newland Crusadersin 20 – 34 (7 – 20) Lohjalla pelatussa Vaahteraliigan päätöskierroksen pelissä. Voitollaan Helsinkiläiset nousivat 16 sarjapisteeseen ja ottivat tukevan kiinnityksen runkosarjan kakkossijaan.

Torstain vaahteraliigakamppailun asetelmat olivat selvät. Crusaders pelasi vapautuneesti kauden viimeisen pelinsä ja Wolverines tarvitsi voiton pysyäkseen mukana taistelussa välierien kotiedusta. Lohjalaiset halusivat antaa kotiyleisölleen komean päästöspelin ja myös onnistuivat siinä. Wolverines sai kelloa kuluttavasta pelitaktiikastaan huolimatta tehdä täyden iltapuhteen kirjatakseen sarjapisteet omaan sarakkeeseensa.

Crusadersin pelinrakentaja Shay Netter päätti kautensa komeasti. Vaahteralligan hakatuin ja ehkä iskunkestävin pelinrakentaja heitti päätöspelissä kaksi touchdownia ja keräsi heittojaardeja yhteensä 333. Lisäksi mies juoksi itse yhden joukkueensa TD:n. Kaksi heitettyä maalia nostavat Netterin Vaahteraliigan pelinrakentajien TD-tilaston jaetulle kärkipaikalle yhdessä torstaina niin ikään kaksi TD:tä heittäneen Jabari Harrisin kanssa.

Lohjalaisjoukkueen taistelun ilmentymä oli pieni espanjalaispelaaja Matias Castagno, joka tuntui ehtivän joka paikkaan molemmin puolin palloa. Puolustuksessa mies esti pariin otteeseen varman Wolverines-maalin takapuolustajan paikaltaan ja hyökkäyksessä kiinniottojaardeja karttui 101. Eniten jaardeja joukkueestaan keräsi Aaron David joka teki 110 etenemisjaardin lisäksi yhden TD:n. Toisen Crusadersin heitto-TD:n kiinniottaja oli Nolan Corpening.

Crusaders-puolustuksessa eniten taklauksia kirjattiin Miles Corpeningille. Torstain 9,5 pysäytystä nostaa miehen Vaahteraliigan taklaustilaston ykköspaikalle kokonaisluvulla 85.  Myös Henri Nordström päätti kautensa komeasti onnistumalla taklauksissa 8 kertaa,

Lohjalaisten kausi oli vaikea. Hattua pitää kuitenkin nostaa joukkueen valmennukselle, joka onnistui raapimaan kasaan jokaisen otteluunsa kokoonpanon, jonka taisteluilme oli hyvä, vaikka useimmiten turpiin tuli rajusti.  Crusaders kärsi läpi kauden pahasta pelaajapulasta ja joutui paikkaamaan tilannetta ulkomaisilla sotureilla. Seuran puheenjohtaja Simo Takanen kertoi ottelun jälkeen Ruutu-haastattelussaan pelaajavärväysten olevan jo vauhissa tulevaisuutta varten.

Wolverines juoksi kelloa pois

Helsinki Wolverines lähti peliin nuivalla taktiikalla.  Pelikelloa lähdettiin juoksemaan pois pelin alusta lähtien ja kaikkiaan torstaina juoksupelein kerättiin 259 jaardia.  Ottelun Vakuuttavimpana pelaajana palkittu William Young keräsi jaardeista 172 ja mies onnistui juoksemaan maalialueelle pallon kanssa kertaalleen. Joonatan El Ouacefille kertyi jaardeja 49.

Ottaen huomioon kauden vaiheen, Wolverines-pelinrakentaja Jabari Harris uhmasi kohtaloaan juoksemalla varsinkin ottelun viimeisellä neljänneksellä itse pallon kanssa aikaa kuluttaakseen. Jaardeja kertyi 35 ja kertaalleen Harris pääsi pallon kanssa maaliviivan ylitse.

Wolverines-puolustuksessa eniten taklauksia kirjattiin Joseph Kordusille.  Aleksi Olavuo onnistui säkittämään vastustajan pelinrakentajan kahdesti.  Eric Irvin hölmöili itsenä suihkuun jo ottelun avausneljänneksellä, ja miehen puuttuminen helsinkiläisten takakentältä avasi tilaa Crusadersille ja sen lohjalaiset käyttivät tehokkaasti hyväkseen.

Curtis Slater otti pelissä yhden syötönkatkon ja nousi liiga katkotilastossa jaetulle kärkipaikalle kolmen muun neljä intteriä napanneen pelaajan kanssa. Myös Kordus onnistui pelissä kertaalleen katkossa.

Wolverines pysäytti Crusaders-hyökkäyksen kolmasti aivan maalialueen rajalla. Ottelun tuloksen huomioiden voi tietysti spekuloida mitä olisi käynyt, jos Crusaders olisi onnistunut pusertamaan tilanteet maaliin saakka. Näin ei kuitenkaan käynyt ja helsinkiläiset saivat juuri sen mitä olivat hakemassa. Kaksi sarjapistettä näyttämättä pelikirjastaan mitään uutta ottelua seuraaville silmäpareille.

Wolverines nousi sarjataulukossa tilanteeseen 8-4  ja pitää vahvasti kiinni välieräpelin kotiedusta. Roostersilla on mahdollisuus nousta Ahmojen edelle voittamalla Steelers perjantaina Kuopiossa. Crisadersin kausi on ohi ja lopullisena sijoituksena Vaahteraliigan kuudes sija.

Helsinki Wolverines kohtaa torstain liigapelissään United Newland Crusadersin Lohjalla. Voitolla helsinkiläiset ottavat kiinnityksen playoff-pelien kotietuun. Crusaders lähtee kauden päätöspeliinsä paineettomassa tilassa. Sarjan kuudes sija on varmistettu ja kentällä pääsee fiilistelemään kauden viimeisistä kontakteista.

Wolverines lähtee tavoittelemaan Harjun kentältä kahta pistettä ja hyvää asemaa välieräpelien asetelmiin.  Vaahteraliigan viimeisen runkosarjakierroksen kaikilla peleillä on suuri merkitys playoff-parien lopulliseen muodostumiseen. Mikäli kaikki kierroksen pelit menevät sarjasijoitusten ennakoimalla tavalla Wolverines nousee sarjataukukossa kakkoseksi. Jos missä tahansa pelissä tapahtuu yllätyksiä, pakka pistetään uusiksi.

Torstain vierasjoukkue Wolverines marssittaa Lohjan Harjun kentälle täyden 45 pelaajan rosterin. Avainpelaajista ainoastaan Ville Valasti on edelleen toipilaana ja kaikille muille, paitsi puolustuksen takakentän pelipaikoille vaihtomiehiä löytyy runsaasti. Puolustuksen takakenttä on juuri se puolustuksen alue, jolla helsinkiläiset saavat olla torstaina hereillä. Wolverines lähtee hakemaan pelistä kahta sarjapistettä, eikä tule esittämään yleisöllä mitään ylimääräisiä uusia kuvioitaan. Niiden aika on viikon kuluttua.

Crusadesin hyökkäystä johtaa Vaahteraliigan ”hakatuin mies”, Shay Netter. Crusaders-pelinrakentaja on paitsi sarjan eniten säkitetty QB, myös kärkikahinoissa mukana heitettyjen jaardien ja touchdownien tilastoissa. Netterillä on kaikista pelinrakentajista eniten heittoyrityksiä, mutta myös syötönkatkoja (15 kpl). Torstain pelissä lienee turha odottaa Crusadersilta aiemmasta poikkeavaa pelisuunnitelmaa, joten palloa laitetaan ilmaan ja taitavat laitahyökkääjät käyttävät kaiken saamansa tilan.

Joukkueiden edellinen kohtaaminen toukokuussa päättyi Wolverinesin 45–6 voittoon. Crusaders lähtee kauden viimeiseen peliin yhden viikon levänneenä ja täysin paineettomassa tilassa. Torstaina kotijoukkue tarjoilee pomminvarmasti kotiyleisölleen tasokkaan näytöksen, jolla vaikea kausi saadaan kunnialla pakettiin.

Vaahteraliigan päätöskierroksen ottelu Crusaders – Wolverines pelataan torstaina 25.8. Lohjan Harjun kentällä. Kickoff klo 18:30.

Näillä pääset vauhtiin
