Crocodiles käy taistelua kotiedusta – Steelers vierailee Seinäjoella

Ennakkoon arvioituna viikonlopun mielenkiintoisin ottelu pelataan lauantaina Seinäjoella. Crocodiles (7–2) haastaa hallitsevan mestarin Steelersin (9–0) kotikentällään Jouppilanvuorella. Voitto nostaisi Crocodilesin osakkeet korkealle pudotuspelien kotietua ajatellen. Kumpikin joukkue on jo paikkansa välierissä ansainnut, joten ottelusta odotetaan tasaista ja laadukasta.

Osapuolet kohtasivat Kuopiossa kesäkuun alussa. Tuolloin Steelers voitti ottelun lukemin 42–21, eikä tilastojen takaa tarvitse kovin syvältä ratkaisua etsiä: Steelers juoksi 287 jaardia 7,8 jaardin keskiarvolla ja teki kaikki touchdowninsa juosten Le’Anthony Reasenoverin onnistuessa maalinteossa viidesti. Vaikka Crocodiles ei tuolloin hävinnyt hyökkäysjaardeissa kuin reilun 75 yksikön verran, eivät seinäjokiset päässeet kertaakaan kolmansilla tai neljänsillä yrityksillä uusiin yrityksiin asti (0/9).

Näistä kumpuaakin kotijoukkueen osalta kaksi ratkaisevaa kysymystä lauantaita ajatellen: 1. Kuinka hidastaa Steelersin juoksupeliä ja pakottaa Steelers heittämään? (ikuisuuskysymys) ja 2. Kuinka pitää oma hyökkäys kentällä mahdollisimman hallitusti ottelun alusta alkaen?

Vastauksien viitteitä nähdään muun muassa Crocodilesin aloituskokoonpanosta. Kuopiossa joukkue luotti kolmen linjapelaajan etuyksikköön. Nyt Emmitt Gooden, Artur Pinheiro, Luka Hietala ja Seth Zinsasettuvat nelikkona Steelersin linjaa vastaan. Mm. Pinheiro ei pelannut edellisessä ottelussa ja Goodenkin oli vasta maahan tullut. Nyt puolestaan Filip Zacok on sivussa ja Hietala pelaa aloittavassa kentällisessä. Linjassa käydään lauantaina valtava ja kenties ratkaisevin taistelu – siis vielä tavanomaistakin suurempi ja ratkaisevampi. Tätä pakettia Steelers hämmentää mielellään blokkaavilla keskushyökkääjillä ja sisemmillä laitahyökkääjillä eli ns. H-backeilla. Iiro-Pekka Paakki on listattu otteluun epävarmaksi, mutta Jaakko Paananen on saanut jälleen lisää harjoitusta päävalmentaja Pekka Utriaisen pelikirjan parissa.

Crocodilesin tukimiehistä Saidou Jallow keskellä ja Jaska Värinen sekä Juhani Koivumäki laidoilla ovat avoimen kentän tilanteissa paljon vartijoina – Reasenoveriin pitää päästä kiinni. Ottelu näyttää, kuinka lähelle aloituslinjaa Crocodiles uskaltaa safetyja eli Aatu Tuokkoa ja Akseli Syrjästä tuoda ja kuinka yksin jättää kulmapuolustajat laitoihin. Steelers-laitahyökkääjistä varsinkin Hannes Harju ja Kaapo Peurakumpu ovat tällä kaudella onnistuneet räjäyttämään pankin isoilla peleillä eikä Joey Bradley epäröi pommittaa pitkiä heittoja laitaan, jos paikan siellä näkee.

Veikka Lehtonen ja Ander Roulette palaavat suolle

Crocodiles esitti viime viikolla tasapainoisen hyökkäysnäytelmän ottelussa, jossa Velodromilla kaatui Wolverines. Christian Powell oli jälleen hirmuvedossa, mutta myös Janne Särkelä onnistui pitkässä maalipelissä ja Zach Whitehead heitti useammat uudet yritykset sisemmän laitahyökkääjän Kristian Ristilän käsiin. Vaikka Anttoni Lampivuo onkin lauantain ottelusta sivussa, riittää Whiteheadilla heitoissaan kohteita – joihin lukeutuu myös keskushyökkääjä Powell. Crocodilesin heittopeli on tukevoitunut ja kiillottunut mitä pidemmälle kausi on edennyt. Nyt sen on oltava kauden parasta. Asetelma on miellyttävää katseltavaa myös siksi, että siinä missä Crocodiles luottaa kotimaisiin kiinniottajiin, luottaa Steelers kotimaisiin heittopuolustajiin.

Edellisestä Steelers-pelistä Crocodilesin hyökkäyksen linja on vahvistunut Oscar Strömstedtillä ja häntä vastaan asettuu Steelersin Ander Roulette, joka hänkään ei edessä kohtaamisessa pelannut. Ranskalaislinjapuolustaja Roulette pelasi kaksi vuotta sitten Crocodilesissa. Linjan keskustassa Crocodilesin Miguel Mäkisen ja Steelersin Ikeem Allenin kohtaamisesta kohistiin Kuopion ottelun jälkeen, ja nyt kaksikko on heti aloituksessa jälleen vastakkain.

Mielenkiintoisin ja ainakin Seinäjoella herättävä Steelers-nimi löytyy kuopiolaisten aloittavasta puolustuksesta. Uransa aikana vuosia Crocodilesia edustanut maajoukkuekapteeni Veikka Lehtonennimittäin debytoi lauantaina Steelers-paidassa. Lehtonen on sijoitettu kokoonpanoon aloittavaksi tukimieheksi Colby Campbellin rinnalle. Lehtonen on ehtinyt aiemmin tekemään blokeillaan Powellille tilaa – nyt hän asettuu Powellin juoksuja pysäyttämään. Tukimiehistöstä löytyy myös vastikään Steelersin kanssa sopimuksen tehnyt Turo Lehtonen. Ja kun vielä hyökkäyksessä erinomaisia otteita viikosta toiseen esittänyt Tuukka Lehtonen jatkaa tuttuun tyyliin pallonkantajana, nähdään Lehtosten veljesklaani ensi kertaa samassa joukkueessa sitten takavuosien Tampere Saints -päivien.

Jos on Steelersin juoksuhyökkäys aiheuttanut omilleen hymyjä ja vastustajille murheita, voi saman sanoa myös kuopiolaisten juoksupuolustuksesta. Yhdeksän ottelun jälkeen Steelersiä vastaan on juostu ainoastaan 0,4 jaardia yritystä kohden ja vaivaiset 8 jaardia ottelua kohden. Kahdessa edellisessä ottelussa Steelers on puolustanut juoksut miinusjaardeille. Crocodilesin kesäkuussa juoksemat 93 jaardia on suurin lukema, joka Steelersiä vastaan on juostu.

Steelers matkustaa Seinäjoelle ”levättyään” viime viikon. Paikka ei ole ollut Steelersille helppo. Viisi edellistä joukkueiden välistä kohtaamista on käyty Kuopiossa ja ne ovat kaikki päättyneet Steelersin voittoon, mutta kun edellisen kerran pelattiin Seinäjoella (2020), voitti Crocodiles 14–7.

Crocodiles käy tällä hetkellä tiukkaa taistelua pudotuspelien kotiedusta Roostersia ja Wolverinesia vastaan. Siinä taistelussa voitto sarjakärjestä olisi todella tärkeä etu ja – periaatteessa ja teoriassa – runkosarjan voittokin on vielä Crocodilesille mahdollinen, joskaan ei todennäköinen. Steelers puolestaan varmistaisi voitollaan runkosarjan ykkössijan kaksi kierrosta ennen loppua.
