Butchers - Wolverines 20.08.2020

Porvoo Butchers isännöi torstaina kovia kolhuja Kuopion matkallaan saanutta Helsinki Wolverinesia. Molemmat joukkueet olivat hävinneet edellisen pelinsä suurinumeroisesti. Peli päättyi vieraiden 20-41 voittoon.

Butchers sai otteluun toivomansa shokeeraavan salama-alun. Mikko Seppänen palautti aloituspotkua 38 jaardia, Kristian Natunen nappasi kiinni ottelun ensimmäisen heiton vieden palloa eteenpäin 50 jaardia ja Jabari Harris runnoi pallon maaliin ennen kuin pelin ensimmäinen minuutti oli täyttynyt. Pöytä oli katettu vastustajan selkärangan katkaisemiseen, mutta Butchers ei onnistunut siinä. Wolverines kuittasi nopeasti pelinrakentaja Chris Forcierin juoksuilla tasatilanteeseen ja Butchers menetti alun momentumin pelinrakentaja Harrisin ottaessa 15 jaardin rangaistuksen epäurheilijamaisesta käyttäytymisestä heti toisen draivi alussa. Kolme ja ulos ja Wolverines meni menojaan.

Butchers onnistui kokoamaan taisteluhenkensä toiselle puoliajalle pyrkien pelaamaan tasapainoista peliä, jossa pallo liikkuu muidenkin, kuin Harrisin käsissä. Porvoon vähälukuinen hyökkäyslinja taisteli ja raivasi tietä Harrisille, Ysufa Lehtiselle sekä Okke Kuipersille pitkillä hyökkäysvuoroilla, mutta voittoon asti hyvin alkanut loppukiri ei riittänyt. Ottelun kolmas neljännes kirjattiin kuitenkin tuloksellisesti ja pelin hallinnan osalta selkeästi Butchersin nimiin.

Takakentällä pelannut Juha-Pekka Suomalainen oli joukkueen puolustuksen tehokkain taklaaja 6,5 tehomerkinnällään. Jesse Vuoksenturja ja Veeti Puustinen pääsivät kirjaamaan säkitykset tilastoihinsa.

Butchersille tappio merkitsi teoreettisenkin playoff-mahdollisuuden poistumista. Pettymys on helppo aistia ensimmäistä kauttaan liigassa pelaavan Ysufa Lehtisen haastattelusta

Wolverines nousi kuopastaan

Helsinkiläisjoukkue lähti peliin vaikeista asemista. Murskatappio sekä valmentajavaihdokset eivät kovinkaan usein nosta joukkueiden taistelumoraalia pilviin. Wolverines-valmennus onnistui kuitenkin loihtimaan kentälle pirteästi pelaavan joukkueen, jonka itseluottamus kohentui onnistumisten ja voiton myötä melkoisesti. Vahvasti keskushyökkääjän paikalla pelannut Micky Kyei kertoi ottelua edeltävässä Ruutu-haastattelussa kokevansa, että viimeisen viikon aikana joukkueesta on vihdoinkin muodostunut yhtenäinen joukkue.

Pelin alussa nopeajalkainen pelinrakentaja Chris Forcier otti ratkaisijan roolin itselleen juosten aluksi tärkeän tasoituksen ja kaikkiaan ottelussa yhteensä 142 jaardia, joista kolme touchdownia. Kuopion Väinölänniemellä kateissa ollut heittopelikin palautui uomiinsa Forcierin onnistuessa 14 kertaa 17 heitollaan. Vaikka heittojaardeja kertyi komeat 209, vietiin pallo maaliin heiton avulla ainoastaan kertaalleen. Illan tehokkain laituri oli Sebastien Sagne joka eteni kahdeksalla kiinniotollaan yhteensä 182 jaardia. Forcierin ohella juoksumaaleja tekivät Joonatan El Oacef sekä Micky Kyei, joka heräsi kentällä uuteen iskuun keskushyökkääjän roolissaan.

Ahmojen puolustus pelasi ajoittain erinomaisesti, mutta vastustajan pelinrakentajan arvaamattomat pelivalinnat aiheuttivat ongelmia, jotka näkyivät lopulta tulostaululla. Puolustuksen kolmen miehen linjaryhmityksestä vaihdettiin välillä neljän miehen muodostelmaan, jolla leveät juoksupelit onnistuttiin tukahduttamaan kohtuullisesti. Suurimmat haasteet olivat edelleen pitkien heittopelien torjunnassa. Illan tehokkain ahmapuolustaja oli Benjamin Egbudiwe, joka yhdessä Ville Valastin kanssa pääsivät useita kertoja Jabarin iholle tehden heittopelien rakentamisen haasteelliseksi.

Wolverines kohtaa seuraavassa ottelussaan paikallisvastustaja Roostersin, jonka kuntokäyrä sekä rosterin laatu suuntaavat karttatermein kohden koilista. Ahmojen playoff-paikka ei ole vielä lähellekään varma, mutta voitto torstaina teki siitä kuitenkin mahdollisen.

Porvoo Butchers ja Helsinki Wolverines lähtevät torstain vaahteraliigakamppailuun rökäletappiot alla. Kumpi joukkue kerää rivinsä ja ryhdistäytyy, voittaa pelin.

Butchers hävisi edellisen kierroksen pelinsä Helsinki Roostersille 60-12. Joukkue taisteli pystyssä päin ottelun loppuun saakka ja pääsi kaunistelemaan ottelun lopputulosta neljännen neljänneksen maaleillaan. Porvoolaisten peli oli edelleen pitkälti pelinrakentaja Jabari Harrisin oivallusten varassa. Amerikkalainen juoksi pelissä 17 kertaa, joilla jaardeja 127. Velodromilla heittojaardeja kertyi 136 joista Mikko Seppäsen osuus oli 80. Joukkueen molemmat lohtumaalit syntyivät heittopeleillä.

Torstai-illan kamppailuun Butchers lähtee pitkälti samalla aloituskokoonpanolla kuin Roostersia vastaan. Aloittavana keskushyökkääjänä on jälleen Ysufa Lehtinen, joka edellisessä pelissä pääsi juoksemaan pallon kanssa ainoastaan kolmesti. Toistaiseksi Jabari Harris on kerännyt joukkueensa juoksujaardeista lähes 81%. Ei siis tule olemaan yllätys, kenen pysäyttämiseen ahmat keskittyvät.

Wolverinesia vastaan Butchersin on pakko pyrkiä luomaan Harrisin ja Lehtisen juoksun ohella uhkaa myös heittopeleilleen. Vastustajan takakenttä poltettiin Kuopiossa edellisellä kierroksella moneen kertaan, joten porvoolaisvalmennuksen kikkapakista saattaa löytyä ottelun alkuun näyttäviä yrityksiä.

Butchers oli kauden kahdessa ensimmäisessä ottelussaan vahva nimenomaan ottelun ensimmäisellä puoliskolla. Torstaina vastaan asettuu joukkue, jonka itseluottamus koki suuria kolhuja lauantain pelissään. Nopea onnistuminen teurastajilta saattaa antaa ottelulle kotiyleisön mieleisen suunnan. Butchersilla on edelleen hiuksenhieno mahdollisuus yltää pudotuspeleihin, mutta se edellyttää Wolverinesin ja Crocodilesin voittamista ja samalla suotuisia tuloksia muista otteluista.

Nouseeko Wolverines syvältä

Wolverines-leirissä lauantain esiintyminen Väinölänniemellä halutaan nollata varmasti nopeasti. Lukemat 70-6 olisivat voineet olla pahemmatkin, jos peliä olisi pelattu täysillä loppuun saakka. Joukkue on siivonnut kilpailuorganisaatiotaan vapauttamalla puolustuksen koordinoinnista vastanneet Jan Vilkon tehtävistään ja ryhmitellyt jäljelle jääviä valmennusresurssejaan uusiin vastuisiin. Päävalmentaja Michael Mattingly ottaa vastuulleen puolustuksen ja on luvannut tehdä välittömiä, mutta yksinkertaisia muutoksia puolustuksen pelikirjaan.

Edellisen kierroksen tappiopelissä hyökkäyksen linja ei onnistunut pitämään Steelersin kokeneita ammattipelaajia aisoissa. Torstain pelissä palataan takaisin lähemmäs vakiokokoonpanoa Emil Jauhasen pelatessa linjan keskellä palloa jakamassa. Nähtäväksi jää, onnistutaanko pelinrakentaja Chris Forcierille takaamaan riittävä aika pelien tekemiseen ja taitavien laiturien tavoittamiseen. Avaavana keskushyökkääjänä jatkaa Joonatan El Ouecef.

Puolustuksessa tukimiesosaston Willy Lindfors ja Pietari Koskenniemi saavat rinnalleen saksalaisvahvistuksen Christian Petrichin. Joukkueen kovat ruotsalaiset, William James ja Sebastian Gauthier on ryhmitetty peliä varten takamiesten rooliin vartioimaan Harrisin ja Seppäsen irtiottoja. Ensimmäistä kertaa myös yhdysvaltalaiskonkari Oscar Vasquez-Dyer kirjauttaa nimensä avauskokoonpanoon.

Wolverines tulee käymään torstaina kaksi taistelua, joista taistelu Porvoo Butchersia vastaan on se tavanomaisempi. Toinen taistelu käydään joukkueessa psyykkisellä puolella ja tuon taistelun voittaminen edellyttää taitavaa toimintaa valmennukselta sekä kapteeneilta.
