Butchers - Crocodiles 21.08.2021

Porvoon Butchers otti vakuuttavan voiton ilman ykköspelinrakentajaansa pelanneesta Seinäjoki Crocodilesista. Butchers oli salamoinnin hetkeksi keskeyttäneessä pelissä jopa ylivoimainen lukemin 47-14 (14-0).

Vaahteraliigan lauantaipelissä oli panoksena runkosarjan kolmas sija, joka toisi syyskuun ensimmäisen viikonlopun välieräpeliin vastustajaksi Helsinki Roostersin. Crocodilesin lähtökohdat otteluun olivat haastavat pelinrakentaja Zack Greenleen ollessa poissa kokoonpanosta ja joukkueen edellisestä pelistä oli ehtinyt kulua kolme viikkoa. Butchersin pelisuunnitelmana oli pysäyttää päävalmentaja Jim Nendelin liigan parhaaksi pelaajaksi nimeämä Christian Powell. Siinä isännät onnistivat riittävän hyvin pakkaamalla puolustuksen etulinjaan miehiä ruuhkaksi asti.

Ottelun ensimmäinen puoliaika eteni tasaisissa merkeissä Butchersin onnistuessa touchdownin tekemisessä kahdesti. Crocodiles pääsi pelin toisella neljänneksellä yhtä monta kertaa kokeilemaan Butchersin maalilinja puolustuksen pitävyyttä, mutta ei onnistunut murtamaan mustapaitaisten tekemää muuria.

Salamoinnin ja raekuuron takia normaalia pitemmäksi venyneen puoliajan jälkeen kotijoukkue palasi läpimärälle kentälle paremmalla jalalla ja repäisi murskaavan kolmannen neljänneksen maaleilla ruman kokoisen eron vastustajaansa.

Butchersille tasan 500 jaardin päivä

Porvoon pelinrakentaja Jabari Harris pelasi lauantaina erinomaisen pelin. Yhdysvaltalainen heitti palloa 240 jaardia joille tuloksena neljä touchdownia. Lisäksi miehen omilla 11 juoksuyrityksellä pallo liikkui eteenpäin 104 jaardia päätyen kahdesti maalialueelle saakka.

Butchersin kolmas neljännes oli maaginen. Likomärälle kentälle palanneet joukkueet tekivät neljänneksen alussa yhdet touchdownit tasatahtia, mutta sen jälkeen Butchers meni menojaan. Crocodilesin Powell karkasi kertaalleen Butchersin puolustukselta karkuun ja maaliin saakka kolmannen neljänneksen ensimmäisellä downilla. Muutoin teurastajat pitivät ovet kiinni ja Crocojen nettojaardimäärä jäi tuota 70 jaardin siivua lukuun ottamatta miinuksille (-4 yds) neljänneksen aikana. Märkä kenttä ei todellakaan sopinut vesieläiminä tunnetuille krokotiileille.

Teurastajille märät olosuhteet sopivat paremmin. Butchers onnistui kaikilla neljällä hyökkäysvuorollaan kuljettamaan pallon maaliin saakka ja joukkueen ottelussa keräämistä 500 jaardista lähes puolet (235 yds) kerättiin kolmannen neljänneksen aikana. Joukkue onnistui kuljettamaan palloa tasapainoisesti juosten sekä heittäen. Ottelun kolmas neljännes meni Butchersille lukemin 26-7 ja peli oli pelattu.

Butchersin puolustuksessa tukimies Timi Nuikka oli jälleen kertaa joukkueensa ykköstaklaaja 6,5 suorituksellaan. Porvoolaispuolustuksesta kannattaa nostaa esille myös ECG:stä kesken kauden Butchersiin siirtyneen Ilmari Ikäheimon otteet. Takakentällä pelannut Ikäheimo ehti muutamaan otteeseen esitellä nopeuttaan taklaustilanteissa ja siinä ohessa potkaisi joukkueensa lisäpistepotkuista viisi onnistuneesti haarukkaan. Hyökkääjistä Butchers-leirissä juhlittiin näyttävimmin vuonna 2005 syntyneen Luukas Eerolan touchdownia. Nuorukainen on yksi nuorimmista tai jopa nuorin Vaahteraliigassa TD:n tehnyt pelaaja.

Mitä tapahtui Crocodilesille puoliajalla?

Crocodiles oli hyvin pelissä mukana ottelun ensimmäisellä puoliskolla, mutta joukkueen heittopelin epävarmuus antoi Butchers-puolustukselle mahdollisuuden keskittyä pääasiassa juoksun puolustamiseen. Pelinrakentajan paikalla pelanneen Nathaniel Robitaillen 19 heitosta ainoastaan 4 tavoitti laitahyökkääjänsä ja kaikkiaan Crocodiles eteni pelissä heitoilla ainoastaan 46 jaardia, joista 27 syntyi Veikka Lehtosen maalialueella koppaamasta tilanteesta. Se, mitä joukkueelle tapahtui pitkäksi venähtäneellä puoliajalla jää arvoitukseksi. Tasainen taistelu muuttui kolmannella neljänneksellä Butchersin näytökseksi.

Ottelun yksi mielenkiintoisista ennakkoasetelmista oli Crocodilesn tukimies Jaska Värisen ja Butchersin Nuikan taklaustaistelu. Molemmilla miehillä on edelleen mahdollisuus yltää kauden parhaan kotimaisen taklaajan paikalle. Lauantaina Crocojen Värinen onnistui kasvattamaan johtoaan kahdella taklauksella onnistuttuaan pysäytyksissään 8,5 kertaa. Taistelussa Matti Lindholm Trophystä viimeiselle liigakierrokselle lähdetään seinäjokisen niukassa 54,5 – 49,5 johdossa.

Lauantaina Porvoon keskuskentällä pelataan runkosarjan kolmannesta sijasta, otetaan kiinnitys kauden 2021 mitalisijaan ja samalla ratkaistaan välieräpelin parit. Porvoo Butchers saa vieraakseen Seinäjoki Crocodilesin klo 16.30 alkavassa pelissään.

Lauantain taisteluparilla on kummallakin kuuden pelin jälkeen kolme voittoa ja saman verran tappioita. Molemmilla on jäljellä sarjan viimeisellä kierroksella vielä yksi peli, mutta riippumatta viimeisen pelin tuloksesta lauantain voittaja tulee olemaan runkosarjan kolmonen.

Butchers on vahvan alkukauden jälkeen kompastellut sarjakärkien käsittelyssä. Viime viikonlopun pelissä Steelers käveli teurastajien ylitse 51-0 voitollaan Väinölänniemellä. Crocodilesilla on alla vapaa viikonloppu, mutta sitä huolimatta osa joukkueen avainpelaajista on yhä toipilaiden listalla.

Butchers peliin vahvalla nipulla

Porvoon Butchers pääsee lähtemään kotipeliinsä vahvalla kokoonpanolla. Avauskokoonpanon pelaajista ainoastaan June Robinson on merkitty poissaolijaksi. Jabari Harrisin johtama hyökkäys on päässyt vetämään lisää toistoja tuoreen yhdysvaltalaislaituri Brandon Ihanzalla vahvistettuna ja lauantaina Crocodilesin takakenttä saa olla tarkkana porvoolaisten heittopelin kanssa. Pelinrakentajaa suojaamassa ovat kotipelissä Väinö Pääkkönen, Tero Kontiainen ja Jari Mononen jotka eivät olleet joukkueen mukana Kuopion reissulla.

Puolustuksessa Jesse Vuoksenturja palaa kokoonpanoon tukkimaan linjoja Crocodilesin vahvalta juoksupeliltä. Kovakuntoinen Timi Nuikka taistelee tiukasti Crocodiles-virkaveljensä Jaska Värisen kanssa liigan kovimman kotimaisen tukimiehen tittelistä. Värinen johtaa Nuikkaa niukasti 46-43, mutta lauantain kamppailussa Crocodilesin ennustettu juoksupainotteinen hyökkäys saattaa antaa Nuikalle enemmän kaatomahdollisuuksia.

Tiukassa pelissä pienet marginaalit ratkaisevat voittajan. Butchers on toistaiseksi ollut liigan vähiten rangaistusjaardeja kerännyt joukkue ja mikäli päävalmentaja Jim Nendelin miehistö säilyttää kotipelissään kurinalaisuutensa, saattaa voiton avaimet löytyä tästä.

Crocodilesin pelinrakentajahaasteet jatkuvat

Seinäjoki Crocodiles kuuluu niihin kauden 2021 joukkueisiin, joiden epäonni pelinrakentajiensa kanssa on vaikuttanut joukkueen pelisuoritukseen merkittävästi. Crocodilesin osalta jo offseasonilla käynnistynyt painajainen saa jatkoa sarjan lähestyessä ratkaisuvaiheitaan. Kauden avauksessa loukkaantuneen Zachary Whiteheadin korvaajaksi värvätty Zack Greenlee on poissa pelaavasta miehistöstä alaraajavamman takia.

Päävalmentaja Samu Jupon mukaan miehen pelikuntoa tarkkailtiin loppuun saakka, mutta valmennusjohto haluaa varmistaa pelinrakentajan kunnon välieräpelissä, eikä Greenlee ole tietojen mukaan kokoonpanossa lauantaina. Joukkueen huonot uutisen pelinrakentajien osalta ei jää tähän. Myös nuori Arttu Aalto on loukkaantunut oman ikäluokkansa junioripelissä, eikä ole pelikuntoinen lauantaina.

Porvoossa pelinrakentajan paikalla aloittaa Nathaniel Robitaille, joka on kauden aiemmissa vaiheissa joutunut kantamaan samaa vastuuta hetkittäin. Robitaillen heittotilastosta ei toistaiseksi ole paljoa raportoitavaa. Mies on laittanut pallon ilmaan kuusi kertaa, mutta kiinniotot antavat vielä odottaa itseään. Joukkueen toiseksi pelinrakentajaksi on kirjattu Christian Powell.

Crocodiles esittelee Porvoossa myös yhden uuden pelaajan. Ruotsalainen laitahyökkääjä Robin Gavelin Miranda pelasi alkukauden Tukholmalaisen Mean Machinen miehistössä, mutta ehtii nyt mukaan mitalitaisteluun myös Vaahteraliigaan. 26-vuotias suurikokoinen (192/92) ruotsalainen on pelannut laitahyökkääjän paikan ohella potkaisijana.

Butchers lähtee lauantain peliin hienoisena ennakkosuosikkina. Crocodiles on vahvistanut kauden lopuksi heittohyökkäystään, mutta ilman kokenutta pelinrakentajaa taitavistakaan laitureista ei välttämättä ole iloa kentällä. Keskushyökkääjä Christian Powell on ollut läpi kauden seinäjokisten vaarallisin ase, joka saa odottaa myös Porvoon keskuskentällä vastustajan erityiskohtelua läpi pelin.

Lauantain voittaja kohtaa Vaahteraliigan välieräkierroksella Roostersin Helsingissä. Häviäjän kohtaloksi tulee matkustaa perjantaina 3.9. Kuopion Väinölänniemelle Steelersin vieraaksi.
