Wolverines - Crocodiles 30.07.2020

Vaahteraliigan avausottelussa Wolverines otti voiton Crocodilesista. Ahmapuolustus pysäytti vastustajan juoksuhyökkäyksen lähes täydellisesti.

Loppuun myydyn Brahen kentän yleisö pääsi todistamaan Vaahteraliiga-avauksessa kotijoukkueen vahvaa puolustuspeliä ja selkeää voittoa. Vaahteraliigan vahvimmaksi ennakoitu seinäjokisten juoksuhyökkäys onnistui keräämään aurinkoisessa illassa ainoastaan 36 etenemisjaardia, joista pelätylle Christian Powellille kirjattiin 32. Maajoukkuekapteeni Veikka Lehtonen pääsi juoksemaan kanssa pallon kanssa kertaalleen edeten 4 jaardia.

Torstai-illan positiivinen yllättäjä oli Wolverines puolustus. Varsin nuorella ja kokemattomalla kokoonpanolla avaukseen lähtenyt kotijoukkue hyydytti Crocodiles juoksu marginaalijaardeille ja onnistui poimimaan pelinrakentaja Spencer Cutlanin heitot haltuunsa peräti viisi kertaa. Illan kirkkain tähti oli Wolverinesin nuori Arttu Ketonen kolmella syötönkatkollaan. Ahma-puolustuksessa myös Ville Valasti nousi esille peli-intoa puhkuvalla dominoinnillaan.

Wolverinesn yhdysvaltalaispelinrakentaja Chris Forcier onnistui vaahteraliigadebyytissään esittelemään sitä, mistä hänet on tunnettu kotimaassaan yliopistovuosina. Forcier osaa ottaa jalat alleen tilanteissa, joissa vastustajan puolustus keskittyy varjostamaan laitureitaan tuplamiehityksin. Yhdysvaltalainen kirjasi ottelun suurimman juoksujaardimäärän (56y) ja keräsi heitoillaan 255 jaardia ja kaksi touchdownia. Kaksi ahmojen maaleista syntyi Forcierin juoksuista. Eniten kiinniottoja kirjattiin odotetusti Sebastien Sagnelle ja Micky Kyeille.

Crocodiles-valmennuksella tulee olemaan suuri työ laittaa hyökkäysrivistönsä kuntoon seuraavalle kierrokselle, jossa vastassa Helsinki Roosters. Cutlanin avaus pelinrakentajan paikalla ei vakuuttanut ja vastustaja onnistui eliminoimaan pelätyn juoksun kokemattomalla puolustuksellaan.

Wolverines pääsee valmistautumaan seuraavan kierroksen peliinsä hyvillä mielin. Joukkue saa kentälle vahvan ruotsalaiskaksikon, joka vapauttaa tähtilaiturit Sagnen ja Kyein yksinomaan hyökkäyspeliin.

Loppuunmyyty

Wolverinesin avauspeli tulee jäämään jenkkifutiksen suomalaiseen historiaan myös ei-pelillisistä ansioista. Ottelu oli loppuunmyyty ja Brahen kentän porteilla jouduttiin katsojia käännyttämään pois porteilta. Aluehallintoviraston kanssa oli sovittu tiukat katsomokriteerit, joista pidettiin kiinni. Kotijoukkue myi otteluun 300 istumapaikkaa ja sadalle tarjottiin mahdollisuus katsoa peliä seisten kentän laidoilla. Mikäli kokoontumisrajoitukset Suomessa jatkuvat, kannattaa otteluiden liput ostaa ennakkoon Lippupisteen kaupasta.

Vaahteraliiga potkaistaan käyntiin torstaina 30. heinäkuuta Brahen kentällä klo 18.30.

Avausottelussa kohtaavat viime kauden kolmonen Wolverines sekä nelonen Crocodiles. Joukkueiden kauteen valmistautumista on värittäneet koronapandemian tuomat rajoitukset, mutta torstain lähestyessä fokus on vain ja ainoastaan pelaamisessa.

Wolverines heittää ja puolustaa juoksua

Kotijoukkue Wolverines on uudistunut rajusti ja painopiste asetettiin jo ennen koronaa omien nuorten lahjakkuuksien koulimiseen liigakentille. Rosteri sekä valmennustiimi ovat rakentuneet nykymuotoonsa läpi harjoittelukauden ja nyt taisteluun lähdetään yhdysvaltalaisen Michael Mattinglyn ohjauksessa.

Torstain ottelussa tullaan näkemään useita liiga-debyyttejä jopa avauskokoonpanossa. Tukimiesosastolla taklaava palomies Mikael Vuorinen on vakuuttanut valmennusjohdon fyysisellä pelaamisella ja voittanut paikan aloituksessa. Myös nuorten maajoukkueessa pelannut Maximilian Ollila saa ensikosketuksen liigavauhtiin takakentällä. Valmennuspäällikkö Vilkko haluaa nostaa esille myös tuoreen linjapuolustajansa Jonis Heikkisen, joka edustaa puolustuksen rookie-kategoriaa. Mies saattaa saada ensimmäiset liiga-downinsa jo torstaina. Kokemusta ahma-puolustukseen tuovat Ville Valasti ja Benjamin Egbudive.

Wolvojen hyökkäyskalusto on nimekäs ja odotuksissa on pelinrakentaja Christopher Forcierin heittopainotteinen iltapuhde laadukkaille laitureilleen. Juoksuvastuu on torstaina Johannes Siirilällä, joka debyyttikaudellaan 2019 juoksi ahmoissa 5 jaardin etenemiskeskiarvolla.

Crocodiles juoksee ja puolustaa heittoa

Nälkäiset krokotiilit saapuvat Helsinkiin ennakkoon vahvan rosterin voimin. Omien kasvattien ohella joukkue onnistui hankkimaan lopulta miehistöönsä tuhdin nipun kokeneita import-pelaajia ja nousi samalla vahvasi playoff-kandidaatiksi. Seinäjoella puhutaan jo paluusta Vaahteramaljaan.

Seinäjokisten pelinrakentajavalinta yllätti monet. Kokenut Spencer Cutlan siirtyy johtamaan joukkueen hyökkäystä ja torstain mielenkiinto kohdistuukin joukkueen pelivalintoihin. Kenellekään ei tule yllätyksenä, että voimakaksikko Christian Powell ja Veikka Lehtonen tulevat juoksemaan pallon kanssa paljon. Juoksu-uhka on Vaahteraliigan pelottavin, mutta heitot arvoituksia. Wolverinesin kokematon takakenttä saattaa houkutella Joni Mäkelää ja Samu Juppoa kokeilemaan ilmasiltaa suunniteltua enemmänkin.

Puolustuksessa ehdottoman mielenkiintoinen tuttavuus tulee olemaan yhdysvaltalaistakamies Alexander Germany. Onnistuvatko Crocodilesin heittopuolustajat Germany, Mikko Havulehto, Joonas Kaleva sekä ranskalainen Hadrien Lynda pysäyttämään Vastustajan nimekkään laiturit ajoissa.
