Butchers – Crusaders 27.08.2021

Porvoon Butchers onnistui pysäyttämään United Newland Crusadersin nopeatempoisen hyökkäyksen perjantai-illan vaahteraliigakamppailussa.  Neljä syötönkatkoa napannut porvoolaispuolustus oli illan suurin onnistuja.

Vahvaan syysvireeseen yltänyt Crusaders lähti perjantain kamppailuun samalla intensiteetillä mihin jäätiin sunnuntaina Hangossa. Joukkueen ensimmäinen hyökkäysvuoro eteni omalta 26 jaardin linjalta porvoolaismaaliin saakka. Robert Johnsonin kolme ensimmäistä heittoa tuottivat joukkueelle nopeasti 41 jaardin etenemisen ja nopeatempoinen draivi päättyi Nolan Corpeningin ensimmäiseen Vaahteraliiga-touchdowniin.  Butchers ei kuitenkaan lannistunut vierailijan nopeasta alusta ja onnistui lamauttamaan Johnsonin Air-Raid sirkuksen hyvän takakenttäpelaamisen ansiosta.

Butchersin tavoite oli kasvattaa itseluottamusta

Ottelua edeltävässä haastattelussa Butchers päävalmentaja Jim Nendel sanoi joukkueensa tarvitsevan voiton ottelusta erityisesti psykologisista syistä, mutta myönsi pelin lopputuloksen merkityksettömyyden tekevän pelaajien motivoinnin haastavaksi. Joukkueen tavoitteena on kuitenkin ollut kehittyminen peli peliltä kypsemmäksi, joten perjantai tarjosi erinomaisen paikan osoittaa itselle, että joukkue on valmis kohtaamaan Roostersin välierässä ensi viikon lauantaina.

Butchersin hyökkäyspeli kulki märällä kentällä vaihteeksi Jabari Harrisin yksilösuorituksiin tukeutuen ja keskushyökkääjä Sean Mc Allen kantoi palloa ainoastaan kolmesti. Liigan paras suomalainen etenijä Mikko Seppänen keräsi pelissä komeat 180 all-purpose jaardia, joilla mies sinetöi Ari Tuuli Trophyn itselleen jälleen kerran. Butchersin maaleista vastasivat Marcus Siiskonen juosten ja Seppänen heittopelillä. Lisäksi sarjan taklauskuninkaan titteliä tavoitellut Timi Nuikka onnistui blokatun lentopotkun jälkeen kantaman pallon maaliin 6 pisteen arvoisesti.

Nuikka saalisti pelissä joukkueensa korkeimman taklausmäärän, mutta 4,5 pysäytystä ei riitä nostamaan miestä tilaston suomalaistaklaajien ykköspaikalle.  Kaikkiaan nuori tukimies pelasi kuitenkin erinomaisen pelin. Taklausten ja TD:n lisäksi mies nappasi ottelun ratkaisuhetkillä Johnsonin heiton hyppysiinsä ja upotti lohjalaisten tasoitushaaveet lopullisesti.

Ottelun jälkeisessä haastattelussa kaksi syötönkatkoa napannut Niko Roiko kertoi joukkueen itseluottamuksen olevan hyvällä tasolla valmistauduttaessa kohtaamaan Roosters tulevana lauantaina.

Viides tappio maalin marginaalilla

United Newland Crusaders taisteli kauden viimeisessä pelissä vapautuneesti ja jälleen kerran voitosta ottelun loppuhetkille saakka. Butchers-tappio oli sarjanousijan viides yhden maalin marginaalilla hävitty peli. Paremmalla tuurilla joukkue saattaisi valmistautua parhaillaan playoff-peleihin, mutta kaikkiaan seuran tavoite osoittaa kelpoisuutensa vaahteraliigatasoiseen peliin toteutui kauden aikana erinomaisesti.

Porvoossa joukkue aloitti vahvasti, mutta neljä pallonmenetystä ottaa parhaan terän joukkueesta kuin joukkueesta tehokkaasti. Perjantaina Robert Johnson heitti palloa märällä Porvoon Keskuskentällä lähes 300 jaardia vähemmän kuin Steelersia vastaan onnistuen kuitenkin toimittamaan pallon maalialueelle kahdesti. Corpeningin ohella TD:n makuun pääsi jälleen kerran Cedric Johnson, jolle peli Porvoossa saattoi olla uran viimeinen.

Crusadersin Mike Hall kartutti tilastojaan yhdeksällä taklauksella ja nousi sarjan takaustilaston kärkeen yhteensä 64 taklauksellaan. Seinäjoki Crocodilesin Jaska Värisen pitäisi kerätä lauantain Roosters-pelissä 10 takausta ohittaakseen yhdysvaltalaisen koko tilaston osalta.

Ottelun jälkeen Crusadersin hyökkäyslinjan tackle ja puheenjohtaja Simo Takanen kertoi katseiden kääntyvän välittömästi vuoden 2022 haasteisiin.

Päättyikö Johnsonin veljesten ura?

Perjantain ottelu saattoi olla kahden komean pelaajauran päätepiste Vaahteraliigassa.  Molemmat Johnsonin veljeksistä, Robert ja Cedric ovat pelin alla vihjanneet laittavansa hartiasuojat naulakkoon Butchers-pelin päätteeksi. Jos päätökset todella pitävät, menettää Vaahteraliiga eräät parhaista koskaan Suomessa pelanneista yhdysvaltalaisvahvistuksista. Molemmat Suomeen asettuneet veljekset ovat jo useamman vuoden ajan toki pelanneet liigassa ja I-divisioonassa EU-statuksen tuomin oikeuksin.

Crusadersin (2-6) kausi on nyt päättynyt. Butchers (5-3) jatkaa pelejään ensi viikon lauantaina 4.9. Myyrmäen jalkapallostadionilla välieräpelissä Helsinki Roostersia vastaan.

Perjantaina Porvoon keskuskentällä kohtaavat kaksi edellisellä kierroksella komean voiton ottanutta joukkuetta.  Butchers on varmistanut paikkansa playoff-peleissä ja Crusaders Vaahteraliigassa.

Perjantain otelulla ei ole mitään merkitystä Vaahteraliigan sarjataulukon näkökulmasta. Siitä huolimatta tarjolla on herkullinen asetelma. Butchersilla on mahdollisuus viimeistellä kuvioitaan viikon päästä pelattavaan välieräpeliin, mutta samalla avainpelaajien ehjänä pitäminen on yksi prioriteeteista. Crusadersilla ei ole pelissä kuin voitettavaa ja hurmokseen päässyt sarjanousija voi huoletta jatkaa ilotulitustaan siitä mihin Hangon pelissä jäätiin.

Parasta pöytään perjantaina?

Butchers on asettanut avauskokoonpanoonsa ykkösmiehet, joilla kauden viimeistä runkosarjapeliä lähdetään voittamaan. Joukkueen syyskesän kuntokäyrä sojottaa ylöspäin ja mahdollisuudet yltää jopa Vaahteramaljaan ovat edelleen elossa. Ensin on kuitenkin selviydyttävä kunnialla perjantain pelistä ja pidettävä miehet ehjinä.

Butchersin pelaajista kaksi taistelee Vaahteraliigakauden päätteeksi jaettavista erityishuomioinneista. Kukaan, mukaan lukien Mikko Seppänen itse, ei muista milloin viimeksi joku muu kuin Seppänen on palkittu vuoden kotimaisen etenijän Ari Tuuli Trophyllä.  Kauden lähestyessä päätöstään näyttää vääjäämättömästi siltä, että Seppänen on karannut tavoittamattomaan johtoon kotimaisten etenijöiden tilastoissa. Seppäsellä on kasassa 565 all purpose jaardia ja pahimmalla kilpailijalla, Tuukka Lehtosella jaardeja on 494. Lehtosella ei ole enää pelejä jäljellä, joten ainakaan Tuukka ei tule Seppästä ohittamaan. Näyttää vahvasti siltä että Seppäsen voittoputki saa jatkoa.

Toinen tilastojen kärjen tuntumassa taisteleva porvoolainen on tukimies Timi Nuikka.   Vaahteraliigan Matti Lindholm Trophy jaetaan sarjassa eniten taklauksia tehneelle suomalaispelaajalle. Nuikka on viiden taklauksen päässä Crocodilesin Jaska Värisestä. Molemmilla on peli jäljellä, joten viikonlopun pääteeksi nähdään mihin suuntaan kääntyy tilanne 49,5 – 54,5.

Crusaders pelaa vapautunutta jenkkifutista

United Newland Crusaders pamautti sunnuntaina yhden Vaahteraliigakauden kovimmista yllätyksistä voittamalla puhdasta runkosarjaa tavoitelleen Kuopio Steelersin. Erityisesti Crusadersin heittopeli oli vahvassa iskussa. Robert Johnsonin johdolla Crusaders nosti itsensä liigan heittohyökkäystilastojen kärkipaikalle (277,1 ydg/peli) ja perjantaina voi hyvällä syyllä odottaa ilmasillan jatkuvan. Robert Johnsonilla on mahdollisuus nostaa kauden heitettyjen jaardien määrä yli 2000 merkkipaalun, jonne matkaa on enää 60 jaardia. Crusadersin avauskokoonpanossa on mukana kaikki hyökkäyksen jaarditaiturit (Cedric Johnson, Kam Harris, Finn Kearns ja Nolan Corpening), joten vaikuttaa siltä että lohjalaiset haluavat päättää kautensa samanaiseen ilotulitukseen kuin Hangossa.

Puolustuksessa Crusaders-tukimies Mike Hall taistelee koko sarjan taklauskuninkaan tittelistä. Tilastoykkönen on vielä Royalsin Sam Dickey (56,5 kpl), mutta Hall ohittanee hänet perjantaina. Takana puhaltaa kuitenkin Crocodilesin Värinen, jolla myöskin mahdollisuus nousta yhdysvaltalaisten takaa koko tilaston kunkuksi. Tältä osin kisa ratkeaa vasta lauantai-iltana.
