Saints voittoon runkosarjan päätösottelussa

Tampere Saints (2-10) otti 28-21 (7-7) voiton vierailevasta Seinäjoki Crocodilesista (6-6). Ottelulla ei ollut sijoitusten kannalta merkitystä, mutta Saints pääsee nyt voiton myötä valmistautumaan ensi kauteen voitto takataskussaan. Crocodiles puolestaan jatkaa kauttaan ensi lauantaina välierissä Helsinki Roostersin vieraana.

Saints hyökkäyksessä Tuukka Lehtonen urakoi 32 juoksua, joilla syntyi kaksi maalia ja 193 edettyä jaardia. Crocodilesin voimajuoksija Christian Powell tyytyi 11 kantoon ennen siirtymistään vaihtoon. Matkaa taittui tällä kertaa 77 jaardia ja maaleja syntyi yksi. Vieraiden Jie Li juoksi seinäjokelaisille myös yhden maalin.

Pelinrakentajista Crocodilesin Jonathan Baker (17-31-0) heitti 225 jaardia ja yhden maalin. Pelikuntoon palannut Saintsin Raymond Cotton (11-19-1) heitti kaksi maalia, mutta jaardeja kertyi vain 100. Kotijoukkueen laitahyökkääjistä Juuso Alakoski ja Jere Tuhkanen viimeistelivät maalit kiinniotoillaan. Crocodilesin Spencer Cutlan oli kiinniottajien ykkönen kuudella kiinniotollaan ja Patrick McKoy-Wilson teki Crocodilesin heittomaalin.

Puolustuksessa ottelun aivan loppuhetkillä jalkaa varoen ja tuettuna kentältä poistunut Crocodiles takamies Amir Kilani taklasi 8,5 taklausta ja otti yhden syötönkatkon. Saidou Jallow keräsi 7,5 taklausta ja Vincent Buffet kirjautti tilastoihin ottelun ainoan säkityksen. Saintsin riveissä Munchie Roberts oli ahkerin taklaaja (6,5).

Vaahteraliigan 40. runkosarja on nyt pelattu ja jäljellä on enää kolme ottelua. Välierissä Steelers kohtaa perjantaina 6.9. kotonaan runkosarjan kolmanneksi sijoittuneen Helsinki Wolverinesin ja Roosters puolestaan isännöi runkosarjan nelosta Seinäjoki Crocodilesia lauantaina 7.9.

Pois:

Lauantaina runkosarjan viimeisessä ottelussa Tampereella Saints (1-10) yrittää päättää kautensa voittoon ja Seinäjoki Crocodiles (6-5) tyytynee peluuttamaan kaikkia pelaajiaan ottelussa. Joukkueiden aloituskokoonpanot julkaistaan vasta myöhemmin, mutta oletettavasti Crocodiles käyttänee avainpelaajiaan säästeliäästi. Saintsin paikka ottaa voitto tässä perustuukin Crocodilesille merkityksettömän ottelun hyödyntämiseen.

Saintsin kohdalla iso kysymysmerkki on pelinrakentaja tilanne. Raymond Cotton oli viime pelistä sivussa ja pikahälytyksen Saintsiin saanut Eino Matikainen johti joukkueen peliä kaksi viikkoa sitten. Odotettavissa on, että Saints kertoo pelinrakentaja tilanteestaan perjantaina. Selvää kuitenkin on, että Cottonin ollessa pelikykyinen, joukkueen hyökkäys on tehokkaampi. Saints pelaajille kauden päättäminen voittoon olisi kuitenkin iso asia ja joukkue tullee otteluun latautuneena.

Crocodiles lepuuttanee miehistöstään kaikkia niitä joita se pystyy ja matkustaa Tampereelle viimeistelemään kuntoon pudotuspeleihin. Joukkueen mielessä on varmasti jo seuraavan viikon lauantaina odottava Roosters ottelu, joten tässä ottelussa se ei liiemmin irroittele. Kuten muissa otteluissakin niin tässä on Crocodilesilla myös paikka näyttää erilaisia asioita Roostersin valmennukselle pohdittavaksi, joten kikkapelejä lienee jossain määrin luvassa.
