Porvoo Butchers – Helsinki Roosters

Vaahteraliigan kahdeksas peliviikko käynnistyi Porvoon sateisella Keskuskentällä. Vahvasti vajaamiehisenä otteluun lähtenyt kotijoukkue Butchers laittoi vierailija Roostersin tiukemmalla kuin mikään joukkue aikaisemmin tällä kaudella, mutta voittoon asti se ei riittänyt. Helsinkiläisten keskushyökkääjä Karri Pajarinen pelasi vasta kauden kolmannen ottelunsa ja vastasi joukkueensa jokaisesta maalisuorituksesta – pisteitä miehelle kirjattiin 32. Loppulukemat tappioitta sarjakärjessä jatkavalle Roostersille 17–37 (3–13).

Avausneljänneksellä ei Roosters-hyökkäystä paljoa kentällä nähty, kun Brandon Connetten heittohyökkäys joutui ainoalla draivillaan sateen uhriksi. Hyvin palloa hallinnut Butchers puolestaan eteni tasaisen varmasti juoksupeleillään kentällä eteenpäin. Teurastajien hyökkäyksen linja, Arttu Tennbergin johdolla, teki loistavasti tilaa Darion Hallin ja Sebastian Lindellin juoksuille. Neljänneksen ainoasta pistesuorituksesta vastasi potkupelien erikoismies Joni-Petteri Malka, jonka jalka puhui totutun tehokkaasti – avausneljännes 3–0 porvoolaisille.

Toisella neljänneksellä Roosters-hyökkäys rupesi löytämään uomiaan. Monipuolisesti sekä juoksulla että heitolla edennyt kukkohyökkäys takoi kaksi touchdownia – molemmat maalit merkattiin keskushyökkääjä Karri Pajariselle ja lisäpistepotku kertaalleen Kim Saarijärvelle. Butchers-hyökkäys saavutti kahdesti potkumaali etäisyyden, mutta lisäpisteitä ei porvoolaisten laariin lentänyt. Puoliajalle siirryttiin vierasjohdossa 3–13.

Karri Pajarisen illan ensimmäisellä Roosters siirtyy ottelussa johtoon.

Avauspuolikkaalla Butchers kykeni oman hyökkäyksensä turvin hallitsemaan kelloa ja pitämään helsinkiläisten hyökkäyksen pois kentältä. Peräti kaksikymmentä kertaa avauspuolikkaalla palloa kantanut keskushyökkääjä Hall oli suuressa roolissa ja toi useaan otteeseen isännille uudet yritykset omalla oveluudellaan sekä hyvien blokkien turvin. Roosters laitahyökkääjä Adam Connettelle palloa ei pystytty pelaamaan kertaakaan.

Kotijoukkueen toivon kipinät sammuttaa Karri Pajarinen

Vauhtiin päässyt Roosters-hyökkäys jatkoi pallon hallintaansa toisella puoliajalla. Ottelun jälkimmäisellä puolikkaalla nähtiin upeasti puolustuksessa taistellut, vahvasti vajaamiehinen Butchers, joka joutui tulemaan toimeen muun muassa ilman Roman Runneria, Niko Roikoa ja Roni Paanasta. Porvoolaishyökkäyksessä totutummin esiintyvä laitahyökkääjä Mikko Seppänen pelasi erinomaisesti puolustuksen puolella ja tarjoili maukasta match-uppia Roostersin Kimi Linnainmaan kanssa, pimentäen laitahyökkääjän useaan otteeseen.

Hienosta taistelustaan huolimatta Butchers joutui kolmannella neljänneksellä antautumaan kahdesti, kun Pajarinen-show sai jatkoa ensimmäiseltä puoliajalta. Molemmat lisäpisteyritykset pelannut Roosters ratkaisevan tuntuiseen 3–29 johtoon ennen ottelun päätösneljännestä.

Karri Pajarisen illan neljäs on komeaa katseltavaa.

Kotijoukkue ei heittänyt leikkuuveistään kaivoon vaan tuli päätösneljännekselle härkämäisesti. Jo kolmennella neljänneksellä todella lähellä syötönkatkoa ollut Seppänen katkaisee Connetten heiton ensimmäistä kertaa kuluvan kauden aikana – eikä aikaakaan tästä, kun porvoolaisten illan ensimmäinen touchdown näkee päivänvalonsa. Maali pelinrakentaja Janne Lehtiselle hienosti edenneen hyökkäysvuoron päätteeksi.

Kauaa pelikello ei ehdi tästä kulumaan, kun pallo kaivetaan uudestaan Roostersin maalialueelta. Kikkapelin aloituspotkussa pelannut teurastajaryhmä sai pallon takaisin itselleen ja onnistui toistamiseen maalinteossa. Poissaoloista johtuen, hieman poikkeuksellisesti hyökkäyksen puolella esiintyneen Ville Kurvisen kokemus puhui, oma vartija paloi ja Lehtinen toimitti pallon laiturin käsiin. Malkan puhdas recordi lisäpistepotkuissa sai jatkoa ja eroa enää kaksitoista pistettä – toivonkipinä porvoolaisyleisössä heräsi.

Ville Kurvinen nostattaa kotijoukkueen toiveita.

Roosters ei kuitenkaan tästä hätääntynyt. Koko illan loistavasti pelannut ja väkeviä juoksuja esittänyt Pajarinen iski vielä ottelun viidennen touchdowninsa. Upeasti läpi ottelun pelannut helsinkiläisten hyökkäyksen linja onnistui avaamaan Pajariselle hyviä väyliä edetä – höystettynä keskushyökkääjän taidolla tulos oli torstai-illassa tämän näköinen. Loppulukemat tappioitta sarjassa jatkavalle Roostersille 17–37.

Porvoon parhaana palkittu Mikko Seppänen syystä tyytyväisenä omiensa esitykseen.

Vaahteraliiga on kääntymässä kauden jälkimmäiselle puoliskolle. Kahdeksannen pelikierroksen avauskamppailu käydään huomenna Porvoossa, jonne Butchers saa vieraakseen sarjakärki Roostersin. Vahvasti kauden aikaisemmassa kohtaamisessa ottelun aloittanut Butchers joutui lopulta taipumaan Connette-connectionin päästyä vauhtiin. Loppulukemat tuolloin Velodromilla helsinkiläisille 49–13.

Viime viikon torstaina Saintsia vastaan tasaväkisen kamppailun käyneiden porvoolaisten palautumis- ja valmistautumisaika Roosters-otteluun on ollut melko lyhyt. Useista loukkaantumisista jo Tampereella kärsineen Butchersin terveystilanne ei ole viikossa helpottanut vaan joukkue on joutunut valmistautumaan torstaihin muun muassa ilman Sebastian Karbinia – Roman Runnerin kuntoa tarkkaillaan viimeiseen asti.

– Terveystilanteemme ei ole kovin kaunis, toteaa Butchersin päävalmentaja Jimi Roiko nähden kuitenkin valoa tunnelin päässä. – Tämän pelin jälkeen on onneksi bye-week ja saamme porukkaa sairaslomilta pois.

Roosters sen sijaan on saanut valmistautua torstaina Keskuskentällä käytävään otteluun huolella. Edellisessä ottelussa tylyt 88 pistettä takoneet kukot ovat olleet jälleen tällä kaudella vakuuttavia. Hyökkäys on rullannut pelistä toiseen mallikkaasti ja puolustuksessa vastustajan eteneminen on tehty erittäin hankalaksi. Sarjakärjen kohtaamista ei kuitenkaan porvoolaisleirissä mielletä uhkaksi vaan asia nähdään mahdollisuutena testata oma taso. Butchersin tavoite torstaille on Roikon mukaan selkeä.

”Hyökkäyksen pitää onnistua sataprosenttisesti”

Roosters on alkukauden peleissään takonut käsittämättömiä lukemia taululle. Tämän hetkinen maalisuhde puhuu tylyä kieltä: 275 tehtyä pistettä ja ainoastaan 81 päästettyä. Jokainen Vaahteraliigajoukkue on päässyt kertaalleen kokeilemaan kukkojen puolustuksen pitävyyttä, mutta sekä heitto- että juoksupuolustus on ollut täyttä rautaa. Roosters-puolustus vilisee tähtiä: takakentän Curtis Slater johtaa niin taklaus- kuin syötönkatkotilastoa, linjan Toni Ahonen säkittänyt kolmesti ja tukimies Niko Kuikka on ollut juoksujen takuuvarma katkaisija. Roiko tietääkin, että torstaina hyökkäyksen on onnistuttava 100%, jos pisteistä haluaa haaveilla.

– Roosters-puolustuksen murtamista on yritetty tänä vuonna monen joukkueen toimesta ja oma käsitykseni on, että ainoastaan Vienna Vikings on siinä edes vähän onnistunut.

Pitkälti juoksupeliinsä luottava Butchers johtaa sarjan juoksutilastoa Darion Hallin johdolla, mutta heittotilastossa joukkue löytyy sarjan hänniltä. Viime torstaina Janne Lehtisen johtama hyökkäys kohtasi samoja ongelmia, kuin aikaisemmin tällä kaudella: kun heitto saadaan kohdilleen, pallot tippuvat liian usein. Positiivista Saintsia vastaan oli, että viime kauden päätteeksi vuoden etenijäksi palkittu Mikko Seppänen onnistui avaamaan ketsuppipullon heittopeli-touchdownien osalta, upean henkilökohtaisen suorituksen päätteeksi. Potentiaali laidoilla kyllä porvoolaisilla riittää – Daniel Luoman ja Markus Haapasaaren mukaan saamisella voidaan Roosters-puolustusta sekoittaa.

Cut the Connection

Brandon Connette. Siinä nimi, jonka pysäyttäminen on Butchers-puolustuksen tärkein asia. Alkukauden heittokeskiarvo 321 jaardia ja 25 alustettua touchdownia – tilastot puhukoon puolestaan, kuinka kovasta pelimiehestä on kyse. Saman tiedostaa myös Butchers-päävalmentaja.

– Viimeksi lähdimme siitä, että Connetten tekemistä häiritään. Eiköhän sieltä löydy se isoin stoppi Roosters-hyökkäykselle.

Aikaa saadessaan Connetten heitot löytävät poikkeuksetta kohteensa. Laitahyökkääjät Adam Connette, Kimi Linnainmaa ja Alexander Wasiljeff ovat päässeet nauttimaan pelinrakentajansa tarjoilusta. Tuohon päälle, kun lisää vielä keskushyökkääjä Henri Jussilan ja Connetten omat juoksut, voidaan puhua sarjan pelottavimmasta hyökkäyksestä.

Vaikka Butchers-puolustus on kärsinyt suurista loukkaantumisista viime aikoina, ei suuria pisteitä heitä vastaan olla kyetty takomaan. Edelliskierroksen parhaaksi puolustajaksi valittu, joka paikkaan ehtivä, Mitch Dalley on ollut puolustuksen ehdoton johtohahmo. Yhden syötönkatkon päässä Vaahteraliigaennätyksen sivuamisesta oleva Dalley on torstaina vieläkin suuremmassa roolissa, kun takakentältä puuttuu loukkaantumisten takia Butchersin toiseksi ahnein taklaaja Niko Roiko. Dalley onkin alustavasti merkattu Roikon paikalle, Roman Runnerin vierelle pysäyttämään heittoa.

”Roosters-hyökkäystä pitää pystyä kiusaamaan”

Reilu kuukausi takaperin Velodromilla käydyssä kamppailussa Butchers kykeni ajamaan Roosters-hyökkäystä heidän epämukavuusalueelle ottelun alussa. Huomenna tavoitteena on Roikon mukaan jatkaa samaa, mutta pidempään.

– Viimeksi, kun kohdattiin, saatiin sekoitettua Roosters-hyökkäystä pari ensimmäistä draivia. Jospa nyt onnistuisimme kiusaamaan hieman pidempään.

Altavastaajana kamppailuun lähtevät teurastajat aikoivat tehdä kukkojen iltapuhteesta hankalan. Erinomaisella luonnonnurmella pelattavasta kamppailusta tulee monella tapaa mielenkiintoinen. Kentällä nähdään useita pelaajia, jotka valmistautuvat heinäkuun lopulla Vantaalla alkaviin EM-lopputurnaukseen, joten taitoa kentällä riittää. Tämän hetken sääennuste näyttäisi Porvooseen ainakin ajoittaista vesisadetta, mikä saattaa olla kotijoukkueelle hienoinen etu. Roikolta tiedusteltaessa, miksi Roosters matkaa kotiin ilman pisteitä, on vastaus hymyntäyteinen.

– Sattuisiko sellainen pöljä-päivä? Kyllä me lähetään sen verran isolta takamatkalta torstaina, että jos näin käy, niin tuut sitten vaan pelin jälkeen kysymään miksi näin kävi.
